Baker, Louisiana is a small town in the U.S. state of Louisiana and seat of Terrebonne Parish. The population was 1,856 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Baton Rouge–Metairie metropolitan area. The community was founded in 1827 by George Baker and his wife Sarah Jones as a Methodist settlement on an uninhabited tract near present-day Baton Rouge. In 1829, Baker purchased from Jean Lafitte 3,000 acres (1 km2) of land east of what is now downtown Baton Rouge for $5 per acre ($30 million Today). He named the community after himself because he had originally come to America from England as a refugee in 1785. Baker's village grew rapidly due to its location on the Mississippi River between Mobile and New Orleans, which made it easy for him to trade goods with those cities and receive goods back in exchange. By 1830, Baker had built a log cabin that served as his home until he bought another property two years later and erected a more permanent structure; this became known as "the Old Place." In 1835, Baptist preacher John Crouch established a chapel here that would become one of the most important religious institutions in Baker County until it merged with neighboring Terrebonne Parish in 1869. In 1865, General Robert Ewell Sherman's army reached Baton Rouge via nearby Iberville Dam and destroyed much of what remained of what had been Bakers Village after Battle Creek Bridge collapsed; this event is famous within local history due to photographs taken by Edward Munch around that time documenting destruction wrought by Union forces during their campaign against Confederate forces across central Louisiana during the American Civil War

A plantation owner named Sam Houston donated land in 1865 for the first city hall and library. The building still stands today, used as a public library branch and meeting room. In 1892, Baker became an independent municipality and adopted a city charter; it remains an open-air municipal park today.
