In 1905-1911, Baker experienced its first tornado outbreak which destroyed many homes and businesses including both the courthouse and schoolhouse. In 1933-1934, Hurricane Betsy destructive damage occurred when winds reached up to 150 miles per hour (240 kilometers per hour). Today, Baker retains much of its pioneer past with many buildings still standing such as the Old Courthouse which was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978 and currently houses local museum efforts; The Baptist Church which was severely damaged by a tornado that struck during Hurricane Betsy; as well as several other small businesses dotting central Boulevard downtown.
