Alexandria, Louisiana is a small town in the parish of St. Tammany in the Baton Rouge metropolitan area, located on the banks of the Mississippi River. The population was 1,815 at the 2010 census. Alexandria's Early Years The early years of Alexandria were very difficult for native French Catholics living outside Paris due to religious persecution under Louis XVI and his brother, King George III of France. Nevertheless, Jesuit priests managed to make some progress in teaching Catholic children within relatively tolerant French society and so elementary education continued even while people were forced to flee France during both World Wars I and II following revolutionary violence there (a practice called Expulsion des Juifs). In 1763 Alexis de Tirole - future Bishop of New Orleans - arrived in Alexandria with a group of Jesuits seeking to help build up churches and schools throughout Louisiana following Philippe de Lamarche's recommendation that such endeavors be made more widespread among newly baptized Catholics coming from Canada since many Huguenots had already left for America during King Louis' reign (see also: Great Migration). Jesuit priests soon set about creating academies—the first such institutions west of Spanish moss—for Catholic boys nearby Baton Rouge (now Montgomery) where they instruction continued until about 1800 when local administrators decided that higher-quality school opportunities would be available nearer downtown near where commerce grew increasingly booming thanks principally to contributions from sugar planters as well as entrepreneurs like John Sadler Sr., founder of Algiers Cotton Mills & Trading Company dating back to 1815 which processed 100% cotton products exported out of Louisiana through Pointe Coupee harbor until it closed operations in 1984 because competition from imports led to decline in prices; see also Pointe Coupee Harbor industry article below.)
