Alexandria, Louisiana is a small town located in Rapides Parish, Louisiana. The population of Alexandria was 9,471 at the 2010 census. Alexandria has been named one of the "Top 10 Historic Towns in America" by Time magazine and was also included in the 2006 book "1001 Places to visit before you die". The earliest known inhabitants of Alexandria were the Caddo people. In 1699, French explorer Jacques Marquette discovered what would later be called Alexandria Bayou (now part of Morgan City). Polk invaded and pillaged Louisiana during his campaign for president. As a result of this event, many plantations near Baton Rouge were lost to American ownership. Many African Americans fled to Orleans Parish during this time and founded what is now Alexandria parish as refugees. In 1821, Alexandrina County was organized from portions of Rapides and St Tammany parishes west of the Mississippi River. At that time it included all or parts of: Hammondsville (now I-10), Harrisonburg (now Harrisonburg Municipal Airport), Lafayette (then part of Rapides Parish), New Iberia (later I-10 exit 323), Thibodaux (now Monroe) and Cedar Hill (then part of Lafitte parish). In 1865, after an attempt by Confederate General Pemberton to relieve Port Hudson from Union troops resulted in disastrous results for the Confederacy, Confederate General Robert Ewell ordered his forces into Action around Point Pleasant Church on November 11th while Union Brigadier General George Pickett led an assault against Union forces under Lieutenant Colonel John Sibley at Five Forks Bridge over Bull Run Creek east of Petersburg; both units sustained heavy casualties but eventually retreated back across Bull Run Creek towards Richmond; however elements under Ewell continued their attack on Pickett's position until relieved by Pickett's brigade less than two hours later; thus Point Pleasant Church became one among many engagements leading up to Fort Sumter on April 12th which finally opened up Charleston Harbor to Union ships.; most historians consider this engagement fought between Confederate Generals James K., Robert Ewell's strategic objectives within Deep Bottom Peninsula area - From here various missiles could be fired upon Fort Sumter without hitting its steel walls direct... Aftermath: Casualties among Confederates pursuing retreating Rebels reached 25% with 300 killed & 1/3rdousand captured including high ranking officers...
