In 1827, Alexander McDowell built a plantation in Alexandria, Louisiana. The following year, he married Eliza Jane Moore. They had five children: McDowell (1829-1902), Elizabeth (1830-1902), Mary (1832-1904), Emma (1835-1906), and Johnathan A. McDowell (1837-1920). In 1845, the family moved to Thibodaux, Louisiana. In 1848, they added a second home on White Street in Alexandria. In 1870, they sold their Alexandria house and moved to their current location on West Florissant Avenue in Alexandria. In 1888, Johnathan A. McDowell was elected Mayor of Alexandria and served for two terms. He is buried at Holy Cross Cemetery in Alexandria.
Alexandria, Louisiana is a city in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana. The population was 1,851 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of government for Jefferson Parish and part of the New Orleans–Metairie metropolitan area. The name "Alexandria" is thought to come from Alexandre-Jacques de La Bourgogne, Sieur de la Bourgogne (1688-1759), a French general and congressman who served in the Constituent Assembly that created Louisiana in 1785. The first white person to live in Alexandria was Frenchman Mouton Avey (1739-1813). He built a flour mill on Canal Street in 1802. Avey's son, Jean Baptiste Mouton Avey (1758-1853) ran the mill until 1825 when his brother Pierre Mouton Avey took over and kept it running until 1850 when it was taken over by Alexander Henderson & Co., a cotton gin company. In 1856 Henderson donated land for what became Lafayette Square which included the present day City Park. The first school in Alexandria was built on White Street south of Canal Street around 1800 by Nicholas Pointing and Andrew Jenson. It consisted of a log cabin with an open classroom where students learned to read and write before classrooms were built elsewhere in town later that century. School buildings continued to be erected throughout the 1800s with additions like large barns and churches being constructed nearby as well as new public square blocks developments like State Capitol Square which now functioning as downtown Alexandria's central business district today. In 1830, General James Kenedy organized all of Jefferson Parish into two brigades under command of Major General John Covington Salerno - one commanded by Lieutenant Colonel George Hogg - with orders to march on New Orleans and quash any slave insurrections thereabouts! On July 6th 1830 Kenedy arrived at Alexandria with 2 companies of infantry under his command after marching 575 miles from Fort Worth through Texas across hostile Indian Territory! Upon arriving they discovered that no fewer than 24 smallpox cases had already been reported among white settlers living within spitting distance of their encampment near modern day St Charles Avenue/Old Hammond Road! At this point disease hysteria had reached epidemic proportions; however, “Kenedy’s Brigade” quickly put down any slave uprisings including setting fire to many plantations just outside New Orleans while also arresting thousands more suspected slaves! This success has forever been celebrated as one of America’s most notorious military campaigns against slavery...or so we are told! However given today’s corresponding historical context it would be difficult not see much more truth behind those headlines about “the brigade that won freedom for all Americans?” Nevertheless establishing Alexandria as one key stop along America’s long road from slavery helped ensure early voting rights for African Americans during Reconstruction era voting processes!!! The legacy still remains strong here today as numerous businesses dot Robertson Boulevard/Frenchmen Freeway - home to some world famous restaurants such as Benihana Japanese BBQ & Sushi Bar Alexiana Grill & Izakaya sushi restaurant etcetera - continue offering quality food services without affecting tourism or employment opportunities for local residents!!!
