In 1819, Alexandria was incorporated as a city under state law following ratification by the Louisiana General Assembly. In 1830, it became one of the few Ulysses S Grant hometowns when he was elected President of America after being appointed by Andrew Johnson. As early as1830s there were plans for white settlers to move into Alexandria from surrounding settlements such as New Orleans because it would provide an open market for agricultural products grown hereabouts which could be exported elsewhere
Alexandria, Louisiana was founded in 1803 by the French and Spanish. It was named for Sheikh Adel al-Mansur, who had come to Louisiana from Baghdad in 1798. The town grew rapidly after the arrival of steamboats and railwayroads, and by 1881 it had a population of over 100,000. Alexandria became an important center of trade and culture in the Gulf Coast region during the late 19th century. During World War I, Alexandria played a critical role as a munitions depot on the Gulf Coast. After the war, Alexandria experienced rapid growth as a result of new engineering and industrial developments. In 1970, however, Alexandria's economy suffered from several factors including social unrest following Hurricane Katrina. Since then, Alexandria has undergone significant gentrification which has led to increased demand for housing and other services that have been forced out of local businesses.
