In 1821, General Andrew Jackson was elected president of the United States and re-elected to that office in 1828; he chose to reside at West Point on Long Island instead of Alexandria because it would be easier for him to commute to Washington D.C., where he held many cabinet posts. The city's development came about as a result of its location within New Orleans' limits: As New Orleans became an increasingly secluded city with few opportunities for outsiders to penetrate its social climates, entrepreneurs began looking for new sources of revenue and investment outside New Orleans. These entrepreneurs discovered that Saint Bernard Parish had ample natural resources— including oil shale located near present day Lafayette— which made it ripe for exploitation. With this newfound wealth available to them, businessmen founded companies such as Gulf Oil Company and Standard Oil Company (now Chevron) in order to create what would become known as the Louisiana Purchase boom period (1848-1873). This period saw rapid growth in trade and industry throughout Louisiana thanks largely to navigation improvements made by Captain John Covington during his time commandant at Baton Rouge Naval Base; these advances created new markets for goods exported from Saint Bernard Parish by river steamers such as those built by Samuel Morse & Brothers under Rear Admiral John Farragut in 1853-54

Alexandria, Louisiana is a small town located in the eastern part of the state of Louisiana. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. Alexandria is named after General Alexander Hamilton, who was one of the Founding Fathers of the United States. It was founded by General James Robertson in 1805 as a trading post on an extensive salt and sugar plantation that he acquired from Pierre Laclède. In 1829, Alexandria became a parish and then an incorporated city in 1836. The city was renamed Alexandria after Confederate General Robert E. Lee when he surrendered at Appomattox Court House in 1865. Alexandria's early history can be traced to its location on the banks of the Mississippi River and its importance as a transportation hub for goods going up and downriver from New Orleans. The first settlement in what is now Alexandria occurred around 1785 when Frenchmen led by Captain Jacques Marquette landed near what is now downtown Alexandria on July 14th following their journey through Illinois and Indiana charting out their new route to Canada via Lake Michigan. They built Fort Chartres on present-day Bank Street, which served as their primary point of contact with Native Americans living along the Ohio River valley and beyond. Between 1789-1791, American fur traders established trade posts along riverbanks northeast of modern-day Baton Rouge while American settlers began arriving from Kentucky and Tennessee in large numbers beginning in 1794 following passage of The Northwest Ordinance (1781). These settlers were instrumental in establishing commercial relationships with Native Americans that would continue until well into the 19th century despite repeated efforts by British officials to control these interactions through treaties or military campaigns. As commerce developed along this stretch of river, it became necessary for settlements to be established nearer water so that goods could be transported more easily between points eastward across open country or westward across shipping lanes protected by hostile Indian tribes living near both natural resources and English settlements Tryon County experienced rapid growth beginning about 1800 due largely to agricultural production stimulated by overpopulation within limits set by treaties with Indian nations having been signed during previous years preceding independence including those signed with Acadian people who had fled France during revolutionary times . By 1800 Tryon County had over 100 families scattered among 7 hamlets totaling 10 acres total while several other villages existed but did not grow because they were too far away from resources or because they lacked convenient accessroads . Thereafter numerous grants were made available for various purposes such as roads/ plantations etc…. All this land lay within present day Orleans Parish boundaries subject only to occasional strips successively extending easterly past Baton Rouge City limits alledgedly taken away since c1800 without any compensation thereby frustrating attempts over many years finally yielded…..While much effort has been expended I am confident there will remain some areas still lying unclaimed /unfilled .....
