The first settlement in what would become Alexandria was made by soldiers who left Fort Natchitoches after Battle of New Orleans on April 12, 1821. They built a small fort near present-day Alexandria and named it Fort Aira following instructions from General Andrew Jackson that all American forces should have their own airfields for refueling and landing operations during the war. Alexander Hamilton had been born in Albany, New York on December 10th, 1785 and had moved to Nashville, Tennessee with his family when he was just thirteen years old to join his father’s business interests there. When Hamilton reached thirty-one years old he decided to move back home to take up his father’s role as treasurer of Peterborough County in Ontario Province—the second oldest British province in North America—but found himself unable to find work baking bread or stocking shelves at local stores because he lacked either experience or qualifications for such positions outside Canada. In 1807 Hamilton returned northward again and began working as clerk at Edmonton (now Edmonton) Bank where he met James Macdonald while serving as bookkeeper under Archibald Buttress in 1809-10; they married two years later on February 14th, 1811 at Stoney Creek Baptist Church in Newcastle upon Tyne Scotland.) Hamilton then started working for William Irvine “Winiamee” Stevenson (1777-1852), one of Alexander Wilson's partners involved with developing Lower Iberia parish into what it is today: "It seems probable that Winiamee did not actually purchase any land until after Robertson's map came out." From this location Stevenson managed what is now downtown Alexandria including parts of present day Lafitte Boulevard between Third Street West and Fourth Street East about 1/4 mile east of current Interstate 10 exit 109B; also included were parts northwest along Third Street West between Fourth Street East and Seventh Avenue North about 2/3 mile southwest corner current Interstate 10 exit 109A (now I-10exit 109). This area now includes much olderoakland Park which still occupies lots adjacent to downtown core across from Lafayette Square mall although development projects are currently underway attempting to relocateoakland Park approximately 400 feet southeast along Second Street Northwest from original Intrestor park lot site across alley from Lafayette Square mall starting approximately east side alley leading south toward access alley leading southwest toward Monroe AvenueAMERICAN HISTORY AND MYTHOLOGY website says "In 1830 Winiamee sold some additional tracts located near modern day Livingston Parish northeast corner Claiborne Highway (I-10 Exit 107) & west side levee bordering Mobile County" so Livingston may have been acquired early too but first documented sale could be Callahan Purchase circa 1800 if true
