Alexandria, Louisiana is a city in the U.S. state of Louisiana. The population was 1,815 at the 2010 census. It is the third most populous municipality in Louisiana after New Orleans and Baton Rouge. Alexandria was founded by French colonists in 1764 as a town on the east bank of the Mississippi River near present-day Baton Rouge. It grew rapidly from its foundation until it became one of the largest slaveholding cities in America during Reconstruction era. After 187 years as an important slave market, Alexandria's status has gradually declined as race relations have improved in other parts of America. The economy of Alexandria is based largely on education, government services and professional workforces; retail trade and tourism are also significant sectors of the local economy. The history of Alexandria began with French colonists who arrived in what is now Louisiana on July 8, 1764 to establish a fur trading post called Fort Caroline du Lac (Caroline Lac). They named their new settlement Alexandrine after Princess Maria Alexandrina Teresa Radziwilla of Poland who had married King Louis XVIII of France that year and become queen consort under his regency. On November 15, 1765, Governor Jean Baptiste Bourgogne appointed Pierre-René Chassaigne captain general for this territory which included present day Alexandria and much of adjacent Louisiana including areas now known as Acadiana and Mississippi Delta region - all land claimed by France since 1699 when Jesuits first set out from Point Coupee de la Rapide upstream to open up new lands for Catholic missionaries to evangelize Native Americans along the lower Mississippi River basin. In 1768 Chassaigne built two small missions: St Joseph’s Mission (later renamed Our Lady Help Of Christians) located on acacia trees northwest corner Broadwalk across from what is now St James Parish Cathedral; André Lescarbot Mission (later renamed Notre Dame de la Garde) located at junction off I-10 just east side Veteran Boulevard between Veterans Parkway & Veterans Bridge Road intersection today's Old Orchard Shopping Center area southwest corner Broadwalk near present day MacArthur Causeway night transportation stoplight inside old army base parking lot across street from plaza currently occupied by Trinity United Methodist Church - site where University Of Southern California Research Institute Chapel now stands [now known as Episcopal Diocese Of Lafayette]. Chassaigne returned home to France following his successful mission trip but left instructions for his successor, René Labarre, to continue development operations at Fort Caroline du Lac with more permanent structures including hospital/market/school/slave quarters etc.. In early December 1769 Rochefort moved 100 slaves into Fort Caroline du Lac from Mansooreaux Plantation west side river below present day Canal Street bridge over Lafitte River only days before British Declaration Of Independence led by Captain John Lawson naming Baton Rouge "New Orleans" colony instead I cannot find an article about this event so please provide further information if you know about it or can locate additional sources
