The ordinance went into effect on October 1, 1875. It required all gun owners in Alexandria to surrender their weapons to the city clerk within 24 hours or face prosecution. Many residents chose not to comply with the ordinance and continued to purchase guns from outside of Alexandria. On October 8, 1875, two white men were arrested for breach of peace after they refused to turn over their guns to the city clerk. The men were later acquitted by an Alexandrian jury but received public reprimand.
Alexandria is a small town in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 8,182 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New Orleans–Metairie–Baton Rouge metropolitan area. Alexandria is one of the oldest and most significant settlements in what became Louisiana after the Louisiana Purchase from Spain in 1803. The community was founded by Andrew Jackson on November 3, 1785 as Great Meadows Station on land he acquired from Pierre-Jean de Laffont. Jackson named it Alexandria after his own sister, Princess Alexandrina of Russia. The first store opened in 1786 and prospered until 1803 when war with France ended and Spain regained control over Louisiana. The Spanish constructed a fort at Great Meadows which served as abase for their Indian allies during the War for Independence (1812-1813). In 1814 Napoleon Bonaparte defeated American forces under General James K. Polk at New Orleans and took control of Louisiana; thus ending Spanish rule over much of present day Mississippi and Alabama. By 1830, most of what is now Alexandria had been developed including its large cotton plantations which were used to produce sugarcane for export to Europe; however some rural areas still remained until ceded to the United States by Act of February 14, 1865 as part of Appomattox Court Decision in Confederate States v. US

The city recovered during the late 19th century but again suffered from economic instability caused by advances in transportation and industry along with World War II-era damage to infrastructure. In 1954, Alexandria became an independent municipality within Jefferson Parish under local government law rather than following the provisions of state law which gave power to parish officials
