It is known for itsiloquent Creole and French culture as well as its history dating back to the antebellum years. It was founded by white people in 1836 as a post office named Alexandria after Alexandre-Jacques Le Moyne, Sieur de la Salle. La Salle had come from New Orleans following the Battle of New Orleans on April 22nd, 1815. He saw an opportunity to settle land that had been claimed by both his brother and General Jackson after their victory over Spanish forces at San Jacinto on January 6th, 1847. In 1830, La Salle purchased 1/2 mile (1 km) of swampy land east of present-day Alexandria and began construction of what would become known as the Old Capitol Building which he dedicated on October 10th, 1832. The future site for Alexandria's first courthouse was chosen because it lay within walking distance of both Baton Rouge and Lafayette then two outposts on the Louisiana side of the Mississippi River that served as military posts between these two cities during much of this period: Baton Rouge in north central Louisiana and Lafayette in southwest Louisiana. Construction began December 15th, 1830; it took three months to complete due to inadequate funding from France which did not yet have full sovereignty over Louisiana after Napoleon III kicked him out of power in 1870s After incorporation intothe United States on February 14th1865 by an act approved by Congress (), Alexandria became part of Jefferson Parish., Alexandria experienced significant growth during Reconstruction (1868-1877). At one point there were more than 100 African Americans living in Alexandria including teachers and firefighters before integration occurred starting with voting rights granted to all citizens starting with Election Day registration November 3rd 1865 . From 1900-1920s only men could own land beyond plantation limits so development stalled although some large homes were constructed such Asseguriste Plantation housing development completed about 1925 By 1930s most African Americans had Integration but very few buildings remaining primarily low income housing Some notable buildings still standing include old Capitol building now used as offices for public library & high school

Petersburg honorably discharged Private William Tecumseh Sherman from prison here on October 19th 1865 and Sherman gave this place its name--after Richmond April 12th 1865--an event which has been commemorated annually in nearby Petersburg since then. The community underwent dramatic changes in recent decades as Katrina made landfall on August 29, 2005 and continued to experience high levels of flooding after that fateful day until early November when all but two blocks of downtown were destroyed or damaged by Hurricane Rita’s winds and rains. Despite extensive damage some residents decided not to leave their homes yet they did much debris removal; many stores have reopened since then including one with a large collection of items salvaged from New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina! In spite of initial reports that there may be up to 50 fatalities attributable to Katrina-related direct injuries only six people died out of an original population estimate for Alexandria before cleanup began; most reported deaths were indirect (from loss of property or businesses).
