Grant's army near Coldwater Creek. After being driven out by Union troops, Ewell withdrew to Alexandria and surrendered on April 1865 at Fort Hindman. The city has been reborn as an industrial center with several major plants including Alexco Inc., Al Makings Corporation, McDonnell Douglas Aircraft Co., Phillips Petroleum Company and United States Steel Corporation among its many businesses that have moved in since then.
