Alexandria is a city in Harrison County, Louisiana, United States. The population was 9,521 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous city in Harrison County after Baton Rouge and is located on the Edwards Plateau of the LSU campus. Alexandria also includes part of Hammond Parish. The first Europeans to visit what is now Alexandria were Father Jean-Baptiste de la Salle and Father Gabriel Nolasco on their journey from St. Louis to New Orleans in 1763. They named it for King Alexius I of Russia who had been overthrown that year at Tiflis by his brother Ivan Vassilyevich (1722-1764). In 1803, General Andrew Jackson moved his army into Harrison County and founded Alexandria as the county seat because he saw it as an important crossroads between Louisiana and Texas. The town became a major center for cotton production and commerce during the late 19th century; today's downtown retains much of its early commercial character with stores, restaurants, bars, and hotels dating back to that era. In 1930, many residents of Alexandria voted to become a municipality within then Rapides Parish which would have granted them more powers than their original parishioners had agreed to when they ratified an act of Congress creating Harrison Parish in 1928; however this referendum passed but was never implemented because Rapides Parish refused to recognize Alexandrian municipal status until 1973 when they changed their mind again following petitions received from several other nearby municipalities including Bossier City (1927), Monroe (1928), Thibodaux (1929), LaPlace (1920) . By 1960, only two streets in downtown remained unbuilt: Market Street east of Lafayette Avenue and State Street west of Broad Street; both streets are now used as business districts or residential areas north and south of I-10 respectively known as "Streeterville" or "Grandview". A severe storm delayed construction on Market Street until 1964 which resulted in some damaged property along its length including one old courthouse which still stands today overlooking Market Street; however overall development continued unabated until 1975 when Rapides Parish signed an agreement with Houston Metropolitan Planning Organization allowing Alexandria Municipal Authority to create comprehensive plans for all its municipalities which led eventually to the present day suburban neighborhoods seen across Grandview Avenue almosttopping Interstate 10 north thereof while also reducing travel time from downtown by about 25 minutes by using Metrorail

Alexandria, Louisiana is a town in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 5,426 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New Orleans–Metairie Metropolitan Statistical Area. Alexandria began as a French trading post on the Alexandria River in 1763 and became an American settlement in 1803. The town was founded by General Andrew Jackson on July 4, 1810 as Camp Freemason within present-day Alexandria city limits. On December 12, 1823 General John C. Frémont arrived at Fort Monroe to establish what would become Lafayette County and Camp Freemason became Alexandria on January 1, 1824. In 1830–31 General James Kenedy's brigade under Brigadier General Edward Pevsner marched through Alexandria from Baton Rouge to join Major General Winfield Scott's army retreating from Alabama after its successful Invasion of Mexico during the Mexican War (1846). The town was named for King George II of Great Britain who had visited America in 1784 and 1800 when he toured North America with his queen Charlotte of Spain.
