They called their new community La Villa de la Nacion (The Village of Nations). By 1830, however, most of these newcomers had either departed for other parts of Louisiana or died from yellow fever contracted during their trip across the Gulf Coast. The only permanent resident to remain until after World War II was Mrs. Lillian Dillard-Lyonnier (1898-1981), who moved into her home on North High Street in 1941 and continued to live there until her death five years later at age 93
