In 1865, Reverend John Fenton organized what would become St Joseph's Catholic Church (now Holy Family Catholic Church). He also founded what became known as Fenton’s Grove Creamery which still stands today along East Parrish Road east of I-10 exit 171A near Interstate 10 Exit 172B. Abbeville is a small town in the parish of Lafourche, Louisiana, United States. The population was 1,914 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Abbeville-Lafourche Micropolitan Statistical Area. The history of Abbeville dates back to 1719 when Pierre Charles L’Enfant led an expedition fromont his map of Louisiana and named it after himself, "Abreville" being French for "Blackwater". For more than two centuries, Abbeville was a thriving agricultural community with green tobacco fields and cotton plantations. However, during World War II it became a key military base for the British Empire as they fought against Nazi Germany. In 1942 General George Crampton established Camp Beauregard there as headquarters for American forces then fighting in Europe. After the war ended, many businesses went out of business or were moved to other locations in central Louisiana because of low demand for their products during Reconstruction following the war. However, some residents kept farming and fishing until recently when subdivision development has restored much of its rural character toAbbeville. In 1824 Antonio Boudreaux founded a mission in what is now known as Baton Rouge which served as a center for African Methodist Episcopal (AAME) missionaries working among Native Americans in what is today east Baton Rouge Parish. The first white settler in what is now Abbeville arrived about 1831 by wagon train from New Orleans under instruction from Aimee Baptiste de la Salle who had been sent to teachmissionaries among Acadians living on St Tammany Parish near New Orleans Harbor. Reverend John Maynard served as pastor at this mission associated with nearby Notre Dame de la Grange until 1840 when he resigned over differences with Baptiste de la Salle over Methodism's role among Catholics living along the Mississippi River floodplain north of Lake Pontchartrain. Father Francois Xavier Levasseur took over at Notre Dame de La Grange until 1848 when he too resigned due to differences with De Soto Missionaries about governance amongst various Creek Indian nations near Mobile Bayou where Fort Long was located next door on land belonging to La Salle family since 1699). On July 15th 1830 Joseph Neely baptized nine children born into slavery within three months after their parents were brought downriver by Domingo Faustino Sanchez from Havana Cuba aboard ship Santa Ana bound for new Spain but only one child reached adulthood; that one manchild: Nicholas Neely (1830-1898), father of Senator John Neely Sr., who represented Louisiana's 9th congressional district from 1949-1993 As early as 1834 white men had started cultivating corn on large tracts surrounding present day downtown Abbeille while slaves worked on larger plantations closer to Mobile Bayou buying salt pork and other necessary staples needed for agriculture ashore while slaves labored inland providing heavy work on sugar cane plantations nearer Mobile City and Pointunknown Island During the late 19th century most black people east OF Baton Rouge lived on large plantations south & west side not east side where majority of white people lived Prior To 1861 all people consideredcolored folkas friends & equals regardless color

The town of Abbeville was founded in 1810 by John Wilkinson and his wife Bathsheba. In 1830, it was incorporated as a parish by Bishop Jameson. The first post office in the town was established in 1831. During the American Civil War, Abbeville sided with the Union side. On December 12, 1862, Confederate General Robert Ewell attacked and burned down the courthouse and other buildings in downtownAbbeville. This attack destroyed much of the city's infrastructure and killed many civilians; however, Abbeville refused to surrender until almost all its military personnel had deserted to join Rebel forces nearby at Corinth Mississippi
