Other successful companies spawned from this merger include Sperry Optics(*), which created high-quality eyeglasses and binoculars; Hoya Corporation(*); who developed new types of lenses including contact lenses and anti-glare lenses; American Optical Inc.* (*); who made video cameras (*); and finally Raytheon * (*), which manufactures optic components used in missiles * *. Abbeville is a small city located in the parish of Orleans, Louisiana, about forty-five miles ( seventy-five kilometers) northeast of New Orleans. It was named for Father Abbe de la Roche, who was born in 1741 and died in 1821. The first Europeans to visit this part of Louisiana were the French colonists who arrived in 1699. The town was founded by one of these colonists, Pierre Le Moyne d’Iberville, on a bluff overlooking the mouth of the Assumption River. In 1759, Father Abbe de la Roche established a mission here that served as a church and school until 1830 when it burned down. In 1800, General James K. Polk moved his army from Mobile to take position at Baton Rouge and decided to winter there; he hoped to gain control of the Mississippi River valley so that he could blockade Spanish shipments arriving from Havana. While at Baton Rouge, General Polk met Captain John Brouwer who told him about an Indian village near present-day Abbeville called Horseshoe Bend which had been abandoned by its inhabitants because they were threatened by French traders operating from that location. Polk ordered Brouwer to reconnaissance the area and found that there was indeed an inhabited village nearby; he reported this information back to headquarters whereupon Polk ordered Major Robert Anderson to march his forces northward along the Iberville Road towards Horseshoe Bend. When Anderson reached Horseshoe Bend on October 20th, 1800, he found only scattered dwellings and no sign of any Indian activity; however, he did find several horses and some Shields cannon emplacements which indicated that there may have been some sort of clash between Indians and Frenchmen earlier this day. After spending another night at Horseshoe Bend (October 21st), Anderson resumed his march tomorrow morning (October 22nd) but encountered difficulties getting through rugged terrain; finally reaching Baton Rouge on November 3rd after encountering more resistance than anticipated from local militia led by Captain John Sibley). This event is generally known as Battle Of Horseshoe Bend or The Battle Of Baton Rouge because it resulted in victory for General James K Polk over Colonel Robert Anderson within two days’ time according to historian David McCulloughs book “The Great Invasion: A History Of The American West From Columbus To California” On October 21st 1800 whileaging around Chouteau's Fort off US Highway 90/ exit 223 just outside modern day Abbeville Lt Col George Armstrong Custer observed 4 cavalrymen probable Cheyenne warriors coming across US road early Oct 25 1876 while adjutant general staff officer encamped near Abbeville

Abbeville is a small town located in the Ouachita Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 1,853 at the 2010 census. The town was founded in 1836 by General David Dixon and his brother Captain James Dixon as part of the Arkansas Territory. It became a U.S. town on May 14, 1868 when it was included within Orleans Parish. The name is derived from Vieillard (pronounced vy-ie-lant), an early French explorer who named a place near present-day Abbeville "Aboise". In 1785, Pierre Laclède built a plantation about two miles northeast of modern Abbeville on land that he donated to the Jesuits for use as a Jesuit missions station in what is now Monroe County, Louisiana. In 1814, Jean Lafitte purchased this same tract from Pierre Laclède for $1 million dollars; it would become one of Lafitte's most valuable properties after he sold it to Hernando de Soto in 1826 for $10 million dollars. Laclède died in 1795 and his estate passed to his son François L'Ouverture and grandson Donatien L'Ouverture Jr.. On October 25, 1830 John Cushman bought 4,032 acres (2 km²) of land east of present-day Abbeville from Francois L'Ouverture Sr.. This tract would later be known as Cushman's Ranch and form the nucleus of what would eventually become Amite Parish. In 1836 General David Dixon acquired 624 acres (2 km²) east of Abbeville from John Cushman for $100 dollars (). This tract would later become part of the town square today known as Dixon Boulevard which runs along portions of both streets named after General David Dixon and Captain James Dixon today: Blvd.-David D., Blvd.-James D., Bluff Rd.-Donatien O., AFB Rd.-Alain A., etc.). On December 21st, 1840 Michael Collins made an attempted landing at Port Hudson Bay on Ilahee Island off the coast of Louisiana while bound for Spanish Fort with supplies intended for New Orleans during their Mexican–American War campaign against Mexico; however his boat sank before reaching shore due to severe weather conditions encountered at sea including high waves and rough seas. This event led to increased American interest in trying maritime transportation across open water beginning with packets arriving regularly throughout 1840s culminating with Robert Fulton's first powered sailing vessel crossing Wall Street Harbor on November 12th,. However never again did such large vessels attempt passage between New York City and Cuba despite efforts by various entrepreneurs including Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt II who sailed understeam towpaths clear around Cape Horn from Puerto Rico during summer 1850/1851
The first white man to permanently settle in Abbeville was Pierre Le Moyne, who arrived in 1763. He built the first permanent cabin on the current site of the city. In 1812, Abbeville became a parish in St. Louis Parish and was incorporated as a town by an act of the Louisiana Legislature on April 3, 1818. The population ofAbbeville at its peak numbered over 10,000 people. In 1830, Abbeville became a part of Jefferson Parish and was renamed after President James K. Polk. The population continued to grow rapidly until it reached its peak in 1865 when it had an estimated population of over 30,000 people. After that point, the population began to decline steadily and by 2000 it remained below 10,000 people
