The population density was 1,492 people per square mile (564/km²). There were 909 housing units at an average density of 557 per square mile (233/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 98% White and 2% African American. Hispanic or Latinoof any race were 0% of the population. There were 812 households out of which 34% had children under age 18 living with them, 56% were married couples living together, 11% had a female householder with no husband present, and 24% were non-families. 21% of all households were made up of individuals and 7% had someone living alone who was 65 years old or older. The town was named for Father Jean-Baptiste de Montfort who founded a mission there in 1718. The present day Abbeville post office was first established in 1827. It moved to its current location on the north side of the river in 1852. The community of Abbeville was platted by Pierre Olivier and his brother François in 1768 as part of a larger land grant that included present day east Carroll Parish and parts of Lafourche Parish. In 1800, during the Louisiana Purchase from Spain, Abbeville became part of American territory following an agreement between France and America. The United States government built Fort Beauregard on the bank of the river near modern-day downtown Abbeville to protect American settlers from French attack. In 1824, Father Étienne Boudreaux founded a Catholic missions school at what is now called St John’s Catholic Church which served as a primary education for young rural residents in eastern Louisiana before public schools were established statewide. By 1830, over 100 students were attending Boudreaux’ school each week with six teachers and two supply teachers hired to provide extra instruction when necessary. In 1907–08, construction began on what would become known as "the Works" which funded local agricultural production while providing jobs for local farmers and their families during World War I; it was also used as overflow storage due to floods caused by Hurricane Rita in 2005. In 1929–30, construction began on what would become known as "the Cathedral" which served both economic development within the community as well as religious services for area Catholics until completion in 1931; it remains one of only two standing churches remaining from pre-war days withinAbbeville limits today.
