Abbeville is a small town in the parish of Iberia in south-central Louisiana. The population was 1,859 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of Abbeville Parish. The first Europeans to visit what is now Abbeville were French explorers and missionaries led by Father Jacques Marquette in 1679. The area that includes present day Abbeville was once part of the state of Louisiana. In 1802, General James K. Polk sent Lieutenant Colonel John Fenton with orders to establish a military post on the Arkansas River at this location in order to surveil and protect Mexican forces marching on New Orleans from under Spanish control. Fenton built Fort Polk and named it for himself, as he had been recommended for the position by General Andrew Jackson. In 1805, France ceded all its land east of Mexico City to Spain as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo; therefore, when America gained independence from Spain in 1812, Texas took over most of this area including parts that would become present day Abbeville. The first settler in what is now Abbeville was Isaac Watts who arrived about 1800 along with his family from England. He began farming around 1800 and built a cabin on an API (African American People's Institute) plantation near wherepresent-day US 178 meets I-10 (now called US 71). Watts became known as one of plantation owners' most benevolent landlords and helped maintain friendly relations between black slaves and white overseers throughout much of southern Louisiana during antebellum times.

It remained an independent parish until it merged into New Orleans Parish in 1969.
