Abbeville is a city in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 13,851 at the 2010 census. It is the second-smallest city in Louisiana and the smallest municipality in New Orleans metropolitan area. The name of the city comes from Abbeville Plantation on the banks of the Mississippi River. The first European to visit what is now Abbeville was French explorer La Salle in 1685. In 1718, Father Jacques Marquette led an expedition downriver from New Orleans up to Baton Rouge to explore its potential for trade with Native Americans. He reported back that he had seen "a great river" which he named "Mississippi". In 1803, Pierre Laclède built a ferry across the river and founded Acadiana (now Acadia) Village on land that would be sold in 1810 by general James Kenedy to Abel Pétion de la Nouvelle-Orléans as part of his donation for Catholic education in this newly organized parish. For many years there were no villages near Baton Rouge or New Orleans because each village received a share of Laclède's profits generated by his ferries and trading posts along both rivers. However, as traffic increased on these waterways during the early 19th century more and more villages began to emerge along both rivers due to their proximity to major cities - Abbeville being one example - so much so that by 1830 there were several dozen villages located within five miles of either Baton Rouge or New Orleans proper! In 1837, when Claiborne Beauregard donated 255 acres (100 hectares) along present day I-10 east of town for St John's College (later Tulane University), Abbeville became one of its initial students and soon after it became home to other educational institutions too: two elementary schools were established here between 1839 and 1840; then came Mechanics Institute (now known as McDonogh State University) in 1846; before long though all local high school students had been transferred southward into larger secondary schools such as Tulane (opened in 1861), LSU (opened in 1896), Johns Hopkins University (opened late 1800s), Loyola Marymount University(opened 1931), & Drewry School District No 2 which included most of today's Lafourche Parish - making Abbeville once again an agricultural center! A post office was established at Abbeville on November 3, 1850; it was discontinued operation on December 15 th , 1951 . The last commercial transaction took place at this location on May 25 th , 1955 .

Abbeville is a town in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 9,802 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New Orleans–Metairie Metropolitan Statistical Area. The history of Abbeville dates back to 1814 when it was known as "Abercrombie". The town was named for an Italian-American convert to Christianity, Bernardino de Abercrombie. In 1827, the village of Abercrombie merged with neighboring towns Haughton and Carrollton to form what would become the Town of Abbeville. The first post office opened in 1829 and continued operation until it closed in 1903. In 1916, Mayor John Sweeny founded a Baptist church in anticipation of World War I by declaring that "the cause of Liberty is just." The war increased demand for goods produced by local farmers and businesses such as shoeshine parlors and printing plants; these businesses were soon joined by other manufacturers which created an interlocking economic system that contributed significantly to the wartime boom. By 1919, over 100 businesses had reopened including thirty shoe stores and twenty-four grocery stores). After World War I ended on November 11th 1918, many residents left Abbeville because they could no longer support production due to low prices on seafood caught offshore during the war years. Most businesses closed down within a few years after hostilities ceased but some like Mrs Fenton's Shoes (founded 1895) continued operations until 2003 despite low sales since then because people still remembered the good old days when business flourished thanks to local fishermen catchin' fresh seafood daily from offshore! The city limits expanded eastward along Uptown Expressway into present day Jefferson Parish until downtown became too small for all those new buildings built in recent years! Businesses Resurrection Brewery (1918), JB's Pizza(1975), Shell station #2 (1977), Waffle House (1981) & Papa John's Pizza(1983) are still open today though their popularity has faded recently due to Katrina making things harder for restaurateurs who have always been competitive against fast food restaurants now that there’s more competition online/in physical stores

The war also led to increased smuggling activity in the area, which caused some social unrest. However, overall, Abbevillehub was an important stop on the post- road system and helped to foster trade between Louisiana and Arkansas. In 1871, the town's population had grown to over 10,000 people and it served as a center for cotton farming. By this time, however, Abbeville had become overshadowed by larger towns such as New Orleans and Baton Rouge.
