Abbeville, Louisiana is a small town in the parish of Charenton in Orleans Parish, Louisiana. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Baton Rouge–Metairie Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlement in what is now Abbeville was founded by French colonists on March 16, 1718 when Pierre-Jean de Montmorency and his brother Jacques set out from New Orleans for Acadia with 4 ships loaded with goods to establish a new colony. They arrival at present-day Abbeville marks the beginning of Acadia's history as an English Colony. In 1802, Lewis and Clark passed through this area on their way from St. Louis to visit the Mississippi River valley. In 1803, General Andrew Jackson invaded Louisiana and captured Mobile Bay; as a result of that victory, Abbeville became part of Jackson's army stationed at Baton Rouge. After the Battle of New Orleans (April 14–16, 1862), Jackson ordered all abandoned Fort Sumter to be burned; however, much evidence suggests that most or all of the fortifications still stand today including several cannons salvaged during Hurricane Katrina’s destructive aftermath which were finally razed by state officials two years later according to plans drawn up by then governor Fayette Davis after he toured damage inflicted by Katrina In 1886 construction began on what would become St Mary's Episcopal Church in downtown Abbeville. The church was dedicated on October 15th 1888 and has since been one of America's most popular religious institutions enjoying more than 7 million attendees over its history statewide alone!

In 1804, the United States bought land in present-day Abbeville, Louisiana from the French. The area was then known as la Louisiane. The town of Abbeville was founded in 1811 by General Andrew Jackson, who named it for Father Abbé François d'Aboise, a Jesuit priest and founder of the Order of Preachers. In 1814, President James K. Polk issued an executive order ordering all American forces to leave what is now Louisiana until France abandoned its claim to that territory. The order caused some friction between the United States and France over issues such as navigation rights on the Mississippi River. In 1815, after France abandoned its claims to Louisiana, America acquired more than 1 million acres (500 km2) in what is now Arkansas and Louisiana. In 1830, President John Quincy Adams nominated General James K. Polk to be commander-in-chief of all American forces in the Gulf of Mexico; he took office on October 15th and ordered Ulysses S. Grant to take control of military operations in that region). After working with Grant for several months, Polk decided against sending any Americans into Orleans Parish because there were too many Confederate sympathizers among those living thereabouts. On April 12th1865 however one army under General Ulysses S. Grant crossed into Orleans Parish from Arkansas and began besieging Vicksburg which had been taken two years earlier by Confederate general Robert Eslick during their aborted attempt at entering New Orleans through Lake Pontchartrain instead of using the river levee system they had planned
The history of Abbeville dates back to the 17th century. The area that is today known as Abbeville was first settled by Native Americans, who named it after a nearby mountain. In 1802, the town was founded by Capt. George Caton and developers James A. Forbes and Richard L. Moore, who planned to develop the rich land around it into a thriving community. However, investor John Fenton thwarted this plan, and the town quickly went out of business. It wasn’t until 1832 that Abbeville became an incorporated city with its own government. By then, the town had become home to a population of around 1,000 people and was known for its fertile farmland and warm climate. In 1863, General Ulysses S. Grant established Fort Pillow in Abbeville to protect Confederate forces during the American Civil War. After the war ended in 1865, Abbeville slowly regained its former prosperity thanks to new industry and growth in agriculture since Reconstruction began in America two decades earlier. Today, the city is one of Louisiana’s most important economic centers with a population of over 50,000 people and a growing economy based on education and technology
