There once was an abbeville, in the Parish of Orleans, La. The town is now long gone and its site is unknown, but it may have been located near the present day town of Abbeville. The first European to visit the area were the French in 1785, who named it la Baie de Vergennes after the then-French Emperor Louis XVI. The village of Abbeville was founded by a group of farmers in 1810. It became an important center for trade and commerce during the 1840s when it acquired a post office and a schoolhouse. However, by 1860, all vestiges of Abbeville had vanished and it is today only an appellation used by local historians. In 1848, General James K. Polk was elected President of the United States and he soon demonstrated his support for westward expansionism with his decision to build the Missouri River Line which would connect St. Louis with points east of Texas on what are now Oklahoma and Arkansas Territory. This new land would be known as Louisiana Purchase which included much of what is now Mississippi County, Louisiana including part of Abbeville parish! With this new land came opportunities for entrepreneurs like George Denny who built one of the most significant businesses in Lafourche Parish – Denny’s Coffee Company – which thrived until 1973 when droughts caused its closure. Other major businesses that flourished during this time include Fidelity Loan & Trust (founded 1881), First National Bank (1892), Coleman Rubber Company (1896), Pincus Shoe Factory (1901) and Gulf Steam Navigation Company (1902). However, many other small businesses failed during these years such as Hennepin Grain Mill (establishing 1902), Werneth Paper Merchants Incorporated ( founding 1916) and Jarry Tobacco Co., Inc.( founding 1917). Additionally, many residents left or were forced out during these times due to booming population growth along with competition from larger towns outside Lafourche Parish such as Lafayette and New Orleans respectively! After World War II ended in 1945 there was increased demand for jobs throughout southern Louisiana so many farms closed down while others were purchased by large companies or went bankrupt. In fact, since 1959 there has only been one farm remaining in Lafourche Parish - that owned by Viacom Enterprises Incorporation!

The population increased rapidly during the 1840s and 1850s due to agricultural production and immigration from Europe. In 1861, Confederate soldiers burned down the local courthouse while trying to escape from Union forces nearby. In 1865, Abbeville became part of United States Military District #5 under General James Fenton. The following year, it was renamed for General Ulysses S. Grant after he arrived in Louisiana as commanding general of all Union troops in that district. A post office operated at Abbeville until 1893; thereafter it was an telegraph station known as "Abbéville Telegraph Station". In 1865, tobacco farming began to become important in the community; this led to its nickname "Bourbon County's Tobacco Capital." A local mill had been built by 1830 and continued operation until 1860 when it was destroyed by fire; however, a new mill started operations shortly thereafter which survived into the 21st century. In 1870s sugarcane growing began to boom due to excellent soil moisture levels and low competition from other crops; this led to Abbeville becoming one of the world's leading sugar-producing towns by 1900. By 1930, textile manufacturing had become an important industry with large factories located throughout greater Rapides Parish; these industries have slowly declined since then although some remain active today including TD Ameritrade headquarters on Main Street near US Highway 190 (now I-10).
