On September 9-10th 1863 there was battle near here between Confederate Generals Lamar Alexander (a cavalry general) and James Longstreet (a infantry general). It cost 19 lives including 8 officers including one who commanded an artillery battery which surrendered after being outmaneuvered by Longstreet’s force; this engagement is also considered among the bloodiest single engagements of the Civil War. On April 15th 1865 Union General Ulysses S Grant arrived at Savannah with 1/5th Illinois Infantry Regiment en route from Memphis Tennessee via Mobile Alabama to lead Federal troops into Vicksburg Mississippi during Operation Crossfire which ended up failing due to bad weather conditions along the way; it resulted in over 50% casualties for both sides with over 100 dead horses on both sides combined leaving behind 2 million dollar worth of equipment looted or destroyed across Georgia alone!
