In 1830, French Canadian Pierre-Jacques L'Enfant founded a Catholic mission at Natchitoches Point (now Chalmette) in present-day Jackson Parish downstream from Abbeville on Bayou Lafourche (now known as "Lake Pontchartrain"). The first pastor of this mission oversaw baptisms for about one hundred settlers who had come overland from Illinois under Father Racine's leadership during the 1820s and 1830s followed by other missionaries until 1832 when Jules Dumas took over as pastor with assistance from Father Grégoire Laliberté. A chapel and school were built at Natchitoches Point in 1835 near where the old Tramway Bridge crosses Bayou Lafourche today; this bridge opened to traffic October 14th, 1840 when Governor Don Carlos Bienville arrived at Natchitocches Point with Brigadier General James Wilkinson to inaugurate Louisiana's new statehood process. In 1861 Confederate General John Caspers burned down buildings associated with local Catholics including the church located today on US 71 just east of downtown Abbeville; however no one was hurt because all the windows were boarded up and most of the property was destroyed as part of an overall campaign against Catholicism that saw many churches destroyed throughout much of Louisiana during that time period including many in what are now northern Jefferson Parish including Natchitoches Point which remained standing even after Caspers' raid despite its historical association with Catholicism. In 1865 local businessman Claiborne Pell donated land east of downtown for a public square which became known as City Park; Pell also made an additional donation for a library which served central business district residents until 1914 when it moved touda Street north across City Park from City Hall before being moved again south across City Park prior to its final location next door to LSU's Administration Building currently serving as Union Station/Abba Avenue station on LA Metro Line 3). The first permanent white settlement in what is now Abbeville, Louisiana was established by the French in 1718. The town was named for Pierre-André Abbe, a French nobleman who had donated land to the colony. The first buildings were constructed on the current site of downtown in 1807. In 1821, the town became a U.S. territory and was renamed Louisiana City after President James K. Polk awarded it to America as part of his New Deal program. In 1848, Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest acquired two square miles of land east of present-day downtownAbbeville for military purposes. He began construction on a large plantation house known as "Frosty Bottom" and called it "Battleship Park". After the war, Forrest sold most of his holdings in Louisiana City to General Samuel Dabney Morton for $5 million dollars. In 1922, the city incorporated and changed its name to Abbeville after Governor John Archbold signed an act giving it this name honors General Sam Houston (a native of Texas). During World War II, Abbeville served as an important bombing base forthe United States Air Force during the Battle of Normandy where over fifty thousand Allied troops fought their way inland from Nazi-occupied France
