The town of Abbeville, located in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana was founded by Father Jacques Marquette in the early 17th century. The settlement grew rapidly due to its strategic location on the Mississippi River and natural resources such as timber and cotton. In 1803, Abbeville was incorporated as a village. After the American Civil War, Abbeville became an important center for cotton production. Today, it is a small community with a population of around 100 people. In 1815, Father Marquette discovered what would become known as the Mississippi River delta while exploring the region near present-day Mobile Bayou. Inspired by this discovery, he began missionary work in what is now northern Louisiana. As word spread about his gospel message, other Catholic missionaries followed him to this area. In 1825, Father Marquette's successor at Saint Louis Jesuit University named him vicar general for all of Louisiana; this title would later be replaced by bishopric in 1829. Father Marquette died in 1840 and was buried at the Basilica of Our Lady of Mount Carmel in New Orleans; his remains were transferred to Abbeville after his death. The abbey that he had built near present-day Lafayette also became home to many of his religious brethren during his lifetime. In 1865, Bishop Samuel Dillard donated land near downtown Abbeville for use as a parish square; today's plaza includes a statue dedication ceremony honoring Father Marquette and Saints Laurentius Gonzaga and Alphonse de Lorette on October 15th each year. During the 19th century,Abbeville experienced rapid growth due to its strategic location on both sides of the river: on one side it served as an agricultural center supplying local farmers with goods such as flour and sugar; while on the other side it produced cotton for export across America and Europe. By 1896 there were over 1,000 businesses operating in town alone! Unfortunately however, during World War I (1914-18) things changed quickly for Abbeville when much of southern Jeffrey Parish came under German control (see World War I: The Impact). With no hope of escape or free passage through Germany’s borders available to Catholics living within her territory*, most residents fled northward† into adjacent Drew Parish† until finally reaching safety within United States lines just before Christmas 1918* (*See also “Jefferson Parish post-World War I” sidebar below). *See also “Abbeville timeline” sidebar below ** See also "Refugees from coastal areas" sidebar below
The town of Abbeville was founded in 1819 by Captain Pierre Lafitte, a Frenchman who had arrived in the Louisiana area as part of the Tonkin Expedition. The first settler in what is now Abbeville was Jean Baptiste Rousseau, who built a cabin on the banks of the Amite River. By 1825, Abbeville had a population of about 100 people. In 1827, General Andrew Jackson took office as President of the United States and began his controversial policies known as The Great American Discovery. One of these policies was to open up new land to settlement. As a result, many Frenchmen and Americans moved into central Louisiana and established villages such as Abbeville and New Iberia. In 1830, Captain Pierre Lafitte donated land to establish an incorporated village called Lafitte City. This city became one of the most important settlements in central Louisiana because it served as a commercial center for goods arriving from Arkansas, Texas, Mississippi and other parts of America. During the late 19th century and throughout much of the 20th century,Abbeville experienced explosive growth due to its unique combination of agricultural production (such as cotton), trade with nearby states (especially Alabama) and its location on navigable waterways which made it an important commercial center for transportation within central Louisiana.
