Abbeville is a small town located in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana. The population was 1,591 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous parish in Louisiana after New Orleans. The town was founded in 1802 by Philippe de La Salle and his French colonists as a trading post on the banks of the Abbeville River. In 1830, Abbeville became a parish under Spanish jurisdiction and remained that way until 1853 when it became part of Jefferson Parish. The center of town is home to the main courthouse and many other governmental buildings. The downtown area also has several dozen businesses, including two large shopping malls. There are also several churches, schools, and parks in the area. One of Abbeville's most famous residents was Representative John Latham (D-New Orleans), who represented Louisiana's 2nd congressional district from 1895 to 1903 and 1907 to 1911. Another well-known resident is musician Willie Dixon, who lived in Abbeville for more than 30 years before moving to Chicago in 1972.

In 1992, Tim Tebow wore his own firearm t-shirt during Super Bowl XXVIII between Denver Broncos quarterback John Elway and Miami Dolphins player Dan Marino. The shirts were distributed through Tebow's marketing company End Zone Marketing Incorporated (EZM).Tebow became one of only few athletes to wear firearms clothing during professional sports contests outside of Major League Baseball or football contexts

In 1803, the area that is now Abbeville was part of the Louisiana Purchase from France. The land was purchased for $10,000 and ceded to the United States by France. The town of Abbeville was founded in 1804 by French settlers who had located there after fleeing Natchez following a battle between American and French forces. In 1819, the town became a U.S. military post when it was established as Fort Jackson on Mobile Bayou. In 1861, Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House in Virginia after his army failed to gain an advantage over Union troops during the Battle of Gettysburg. Because of this event, many people in Abbeville moved away or left their homes altogether as they were no longer welcome in the Confederacy. However, some residents did remain and continue to live there until well into the 20th century. In 1865,Abbeville became one of four slaveholding towns in Louisiana following Reconstruction which ended Reconstruction in America following the American Civil War (1861-1865). This period saw large numbers of African Americans being freed from slavery across America and becoming citizens with new rights and responsibilities under white rule. Many African Americans settled down in areas such as Abbeville where they continued working on farms or worked as servants for white families until their emancipation at various points throughout history; however, most black residents living in central Louisiana remained enslaved until Galveston Island's Stono Ferry Act abolished slavery there on April 5th 1850 resulting in 504 slaves being transferred to Houston Texas aboard three transports called Famine Ships moored at Galveston Harbor
The town of Abbeville was founded by the French in 1711. The town grew rapidly during the 18th century, becoming a major center for trade and commerce. By 1800, Abbeville had become a vibrant community with an active political and social life. In 1804, the town was named in honor of General Lafayette, who had helped lead France to victory in the Napoleonic Wars.
