Abbeville is a small town in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 1,856 at the 2000 census. It is part of the New Orleans–Metairie–Bogalusa Micropolitan Statistical Area. The land where Abbeville now stands was first settled by Frenchman Jean-Jacques Dessalines in 1718 on land he acquired from the Spanish after their war of 1812. The town was founded by Father Jacques Marquette in 1785 as a trading post on the Arkansas River. In 1834, Abbeville became part of New Orleans and was renamed for Blessed Frère Jacques de la Croix (1755-1827), an early French missionary to America who had been sent to North America as a missionary with Jesuit priests under the command of Provincial Joseph Foyé. He arrived in Louisiana about 1800 and soon began evangelizing among Native Americans, founding several missions including Abbeville. In 1819 he also founded what would become Tulane University in New Orleans. In 1836, when Mississippi became a slave state following its successful slave revolt that year, Governor Claiborne Treme granted permits to various investors to establish plantations near Bienville Pass in southeastern Jefferson Parish; one group included Pierre Lacroix and his brother Étienne Lacroix (the future governor). With this new development came increased trade along the Natchez Trace which connected Mobile with Baton Rouge and beyond via the Presbytery of West Feliciana Parish. The area around present day Abbeville became known as "The Bogalusa Strip." During World War II many businesses were destroyed or damaged by bombing raids over New Orleans but many others continued operations until very shortly before V-E Day when all but nine out of thirty businesses within walking distance of downtown were destroyed or significantly damaged by Allied bombing raids which targeted military installations and other important urban neighborhoods throughout southern France including Paris and its suburbs; most notably Rouen where more than eighty percent of all civilian buildings were flattened during three days' bombardment on 12 May 1944 alone despite extensive warning given both ahead of time through ULTRA intercepts and local media reports indicating that such attacks could not be anticipated or prevented given prevailing conditions at that particular time period; these warnings being particularly applicable for targets located less than two miles from central city boundaries having either dense military concentrations or industrial complexes situated immediately adjacent thereto including munitions manufacturing plants housing millions of rounds high explosive artillery shells used extensively against German cities during WWII although Hague Palace which lay just eastward across Ménilieu River managed to avoid damage albeit without providing any warning whatsoever prior to 0900 hrs on 12 May 1944 when suddenly large explosions occurred emanating from rear entranceological reasons only six minutes prior thereto resulting in significant destruction within five acres circumscribed by radius measuring up to fifty meters inside twenty yards outside walls having effecting loss/damage estimated at $100 million making it one of world's largest single bombings ever occasioned thereby causing physical injury/ Damage exceeding $50 million affecting over one hundred thousand people resultant displacement/ Homelessness becoming increasingly common with vast majority livingoutside city limits until rehousing facility opened in 1978 consisting essentially modern apartment buildings erected behind old cotton fields located southeast side currently south side opposite historic district

The area now known as Abbeville was first settled by French colonists in 1699 and named for Pierre-Jacques Abbe, a priest and missionary to the region. It became a town on November 5, 1834 when it was created from parts of Natchitoches and Houma. In 1840, General John C. Frémont explored the area around present-day Abbeville and reported that he had found "a good place for a station" on his way southward during the Mexican–American War. The town grew rapidly due to cotton plantations established there by planters from New Orleans and other Southern cities who brought their slaves with them when they left for Texas in the late 19th century. During World War II, Abbeville served as headquarters for Air Force Lieutenant Colonel Curtis LeMay's Operation Neptune's Spear air campaign against Japan. In early 1945 Japanese forces attacked American forces at Iwo Jima; Lieutenant Colonel LeMay ordered much of his bombardment from Abbeville airfields in support of ground troops advancing inland to retake the island. As part of its history study program at Tulane University in New Orleans, Tulane professor emeritus James Moseley discovered that one local resident – Jules Thibodeaux – had played an important role in leading Confederate troops across Baton Rouge Bridge into Union territory during the Battle of Baton Rouge on July 8-9 1863 while General Joseph Ewing's army was defending Baton Rouge against pursuit by Confederate general Sterling Price commanded by Major General Robert Ewell Jr.? Thibodeaux later testified before Congress that he personally led two companies of Confederate cavalrymen across Baton Rouge Bridge without orders from any higher command? Aftermath of this battle saw most Southern newspapers proclaim July 9 as "Diana Day" throughout much of Louisiana???? This event has been used by some historians to argue that Lafayette erred grievously in not taking up arms against Price instead??? Thibodeaux died in 1889 after a long career as a journalist and author????
The town of Abbeville (Algiers Parish) was founded in 1827 by the French colonial government as part of the colony of Louisiana. The town was named for Augustine, a bishop who had recently been elevated to the rank of patriarch in France. The first white settler in Abbeville was Isaac Lustig, who arrived in 1829. In 1840, a group of Englishmen came to the area and established a plantation called "Hillsborough". In 1865, the town became an independent parish under Algiers Parish. On July 12, 1870, it merged with Algiers Parish to form New Orleans County. In 1886, the parish acquired land adjacent to what is now Waterfront Park in order to build a new parish courthouse and jail. The cornerstone for this building was laid on July 14, 1886 by Bishop Jules-Marie Lefebvre. The new courthouse and jail were completed in 1888 and were used until Hurricane Katrina destroyed them in 2005. The original graveyard still stands within Waterfront Park just north of where the old courthouse once stood.
