Abbeville is a small town in Rapides Parish, Louisiana, located about 25 miles (40 km) south of New Orleans. The population was 7,811 at the 2000 census. It is part of the New Orleans–Metairie–Bossier City Metropolitan Statistical Area. The village was founded in 1836 by Pierre-Jacques Abbe and his wife Marie-Therese de la Varenne as an unincorporated community near the present day intersection of I-10 and US 61. In 1851, Abbeville became a parish seat with the erection of a courthouse and jail on Main Street. The first post office opened in 1857. A new school was built in 1865; it burned down in 1928 but was rebuilt and served until 1954. The old Courthouse still stands today as part of the Old Town Museum complex on Frenchmen Street between Fourteenth and Fifteenth Streets which also includes a grocery store, bank, Masonic lodge, blacksmith shop and other cultural artifacts from early Abbeville life. In 1971, Hurricane Katrina struck nearby New Orleans making landfall just north of town on Port Hudson Bayou before dissipating over Lake Pontchartrain east of Shreveport about 9 miles (14 km) to the south-east. much damage was done to churches, businesses and homes within Abbeville including most notably: destroyed or severely damaged St John's Episcopal Church; flattened Baptist Church; numerous home farms along I-10 were completely destroyed; total loss for both communities exceeded $100 million dollars dollars ($123 million Canadian). Despite this devastating devastation many residents chose to return home after assessing that they had more than enough supplies and backup should such an event occur again anywhere else in their city limits within 24 hours or so

Despite this damage, business continued uninterrupted throughout most of 1930 and 1931 due to an influx of refugees from New Orleans who were Seeking refuge from damage caused by Sidor and other storms that year across America.
