The Abbeville Parish Sheriff's Office was founded in 1846. The first sheriff, W.M. Beasley, served for one year. The office was moved to its current location on the east side of town in 1868. In 1946, the parish became a part of Louisiana State University and Abbeville became the only parish in Louisiana to have an Abbeville campus as well as a state university campus. In 1966, the university separated from LSU and Abbeville became its own school entity again with its own chancellor and board of trustees. In 1971, LSU merged with Tulane University and both schools rebranded themselves as Tulane-Abbeville Universities with separate campuses inside LSU’s New Orleans Campus and outside of Abbeville’s downtown area where they continue to operate today. In 2009, the university reopened its doors after a $25 million renovation that doubled the size of their main academic building and added new classrooms, research labs and other facilities across three campuses including one within walking distance of each other onriverfront in downtown New Orleans.
A few miles northeast of Abbeville, Louisiana, stands the old plantation house known as The Hermitage. Built in 1805 by a French Huguenot named Jacques-René Leduc, it was the first white settlement in what is now southeastern Louisiana. After years of hard work and sufferings during the American Revolution, The Hermitage became one of the most prosperous plantations in the area. At its peak, Leduc’s estate employed more than 100 slaves and produced over 1,000 acres of crops and livestock. But even with this impressive production record, The Hermitage was not immune to poverty and social unrest. In 1861, for example, several hundred tenant farmers rebelled against their powerful landlords. This outbreak of violence led to increased tension on the plantation and an exodus of many workers to other parts of Louisiana. By 1862, however, most of Leduc’s slaves had been freed and his property had been acquired by another European gentleman named John Fenton. Fenton quickly proved himself to be a successful owner who invested much money into expansion of his plantation holdings. In 1876 he moved his family from theiroriginal home on The Hermitage to a new mansion located just outside town – marking yet another milestone in the history of Abbeville: A white man had finally established himself as headmaster at one of southern Louisiana’s largest schools! Today only a fraction of Fenton’s original acreage remains withinAbbeville limits; but despite this truncated history there are many reasons whyLafayette Parish should be very proudofitsoldand historic slaveholding community! First among these is thatTheHermitage remained an important center for African American culture duringthe 19th century; both black men and women lived there until after World War IIEqual opportunity was always available for all citizens onAbbeville Plantation – regardlessof race! Second is thatLeducpossessed some significant financial resources which allowed himtohelp support numerous charitable projects throughout southeastLouisianaduringhis lifetime; such as numerous donations totothe VFW Post #527 (later renamedthe Lafayette Parish Veterans Home)andthe Stonington Baptist Church (now called Christogene Cathedral). Finally,Leduchas left behinda wealthof culturally rich artifacts which continue TomDalton Museum(locatedjustoutsideOfAbbeville)to inspire researchersand activists alikeinvestigatingslavelifein southwesternLouisianaduringthe19thcentury!

In 1715, a group of Frenchmen and their Native American allies set out from the Louisiana Territory on what would become the first successful European exploration of North America. Named for Father Jacques Marquette, one of the explorers, this expedition led to the founding of what is now Abbeville, Louisiana. The town was first settled by French colonists in 1718 and quickly became an important stop on the then-nascent fur trade route between Canada and the Mississippi Valley. One of Abbeville’s most well-known natives was Pierre Le Moyne, Sieur de La Salle who founded New Orleans in 1803. He also helped found Baton Rouge in 1837 as part of his effort to improve trade possibilities between Louisiana and Texas. In honor of both men, West Baton Rouge Parish erected a plaque at its courthouse honoring them both. During World War II, Abbeville played an important role as a military center due to its strategic location on I-10 just south of Mobile Bayou (the Japanese Honshu Strait). The town received particular attention during OperationCrossroads which aimed to open up supply lines through Southeast Asia to Allied forces fighting in Europe. Although sparingly populated throughout most of its history, Abbeville has experienced significant growth over recent years thanks to attracting new residents and businesses alike. This growth has led to increased development around downtown including a new library/museum complex as well as several high school and professional sports arenas. With continued investment from local officials and developers alike, it is likely that Abbeville will continue experiencing rapid growth into the future – making it one of America’s fastest growing cities!
The first European to visit what is now Abbeville was the French Régiment d'Auvergne in 1710. The town, founded by Italian immigrants in 1827, became one of the most important cities in Louisiana. In 1861, during the American Civil War, Abbeville was a key Confederate stronghold. However, it surrendered shortly afterward and was burned by Union forces.
