Located in the swamps of Louisiana, Abbeville is a small town that has seen its share of change over the years. The community was founded in 1825 by French Canadians and was originally known as "Abbeville-sur-Mer." It was renamed to its current name in 1902 after Father Abbe, an early leader of the Catholic Church in Louisiana. In 1960, Abbeville became a parish within the Roman Catholic Diocese of New Orleans. Today, it is one of the most vibrant communities in southwestern Louisiana. The history of this small town can be traced back to 1825 when French Canadian immigrants settled here and named it "Abbeville-sur-Mer." They were followed by others who arrived during the 1830s and 1840s. By 1860, there were more than 100 residents living here. The first church built here was dedicated on October 14th that year. Father Antoine Leblanc served as pastor at this location for many years before he moved to Metairie Parish near Baton Rouge. When New Orleans was founded on April 20th, 1785, detachments from General Hernando de Soto's army marched through what is now Abbeville and established protection for settlers along their route. This area would become part of New Orleans when it was ceded to France following the American Revolution. When Louisiana became part of Mexico following independence from Spain, many French Canadians living in this area decided to migrate rather than fight for their countrymen who had already lost everything they had (except their land). Consequently, many people from these areas immigrated to Texas beginning in 1846; however, most returned home soon after because life didn't seem quite right under Mexican rule (and because they knew Spanish could be a better career choice). In 1862, Confederate General Robert Ewell made his way downriver toward Baton Rouge with orders to besiege that city while Rebel forces fought off an attack by Union troops led by Brigadier General James Longstreet on May 1st. Unfortunately for Ewell and his force - long distances allow only skirmishes between units not strategic battles - he reached Baton Rouge too late for any serious fighting; instead he withdrew his troops back upriver without achieving anything more than minor successes beyond destroying some bridges and damaging others (including one which still stands today). This debacle effectively ended Confederate efforts northward across America due chiefly to logistical problems caused by Llongstreet's superior numbers formations vs Ewell's tiny unit size combined with lackadaisical commandership overall... Although Ewell later achieved fame as a battlefield commander during World War II Service Rendered Captain with distinction opposite Patton at Anacostia Riverfront National Battlefield Park near Alexandria Virginia - all claims are spurious given his rank at that time - our brief mention here does justice to him insofar as military accomplishments go...

In 1809, the United States Government leased land in present-day Abbeville, Louisiana from the Adair family. The tract of land was about 12 acres and included a small stream that flowed through the village. The first permanent settler in what is now Abbeville was James Wilkinson. Wilkinson built his cabin on the bank of the stream in 1810. The following year, he founded the town of Abbeville on land next to Wilkinson's Cabin. The first post office in what is now Abbeville opened in 1812. It was named for Judge Edward Everett Hale, who had been a U.S. Senator from Massachusetts at the time of its opening. In 1816, American Revolutionary War officer Colonel John Forbes donated land near present-day Jasper Street and White Oak Avenue for a courthouse and jail complex known as Forbes' Fort (now part of City Park). In 1840, when Hurricane Katrina destroyed most of New Orleans, much of southeastern Louisiana including what is nowAbbeville suffered damage. As a result, many people moved to Abbeville during this period; among them were brothers Isaac and Samuel Morse who established their printing press here in 1851-1853
The town of Abbeville, Louisiana was founded in 1814 by a group of Englishmen who were looking for a new land to settle. The town was named after the Reverend Abram de la Fayette, an American Revolutionary War hero. The town grew quickly and soon had a population of around 100 people. In 1821, the town passed through a process called annexation which added another community, La Halle, to its population. In 1828, the town became part of New Orleans and experienced several years of growth before declining in membership and size in the 1840s. By 1850, Abbeville had only 5 residents remaining and it ceased to exist as an independent community altogether.
