When Union General Ulysses S Grant arrived at this location on April 12th 1865 they found that most of Abbeville had burned down due to Sherman's march through northern Louisiana two days earlier; only about 60 buildings remained standing by that time. A post office operated from 1865 until 1975; however, letter service ceased with the closure of all U.S.) postal services on October 15th 1975 due to budget cuts within Congress following Watergate Scandal.
