This led to increased tension between whites and African Americans in this area which led to several skirmishes throughout 1837-1838 called The Great Rebellion. Despite these challenges, Abbeville managed to remain largely intact through these years despite various factors such as floods that struck both Upper and Lower France in 1840s; economic downturns that hit general society during this time; Confederate military occupation from 1861-1865;and finally World War II when many of its residents chose not to fight because they felt their home would be taken away if they did so.
