Abbeville, Louisiana is a small town located in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana. It is the seat of Abbeville Parish and has a population of approximately 95. The parish was created on November 3, 1817 from parts of New Orleans and St. Tammany Parish. The community began as two small farms near the present-day intersection of US 64 and LA 27. The first post office was established in 1824, and the first store was built in 1829. The most important development in Abbeville's history came when Captain Isaac Sheppard founded the town on his plantation in 1834. Sheppard became one of America's leading investors in early French land grants throughout Louisiana. He also played an important role in founding the University of Mississippi at Oxford in 1840. In 1860, Confederate General Robert Ewell proposed forming a new parish named for him withinJefferson Parish after he had become military governor of that area following the Battle of Gettysburg. Although some residents objected to this move because they thought it would only benefit Ewell's enemies, Sheppard accepted and the parish acquired its current name on November 3, 1867. A major event occurred during World War II when many local businesses were damaged by bombings by Japanese forces during their battle against American forces near Abbeville Gulf beachfront activities ceased completely due to fear that large numbers of Allied troops might converging there should hostilities resume between Japan and America following victory over Imperial Japan over North AfricaOperation Husky). It was only through diplomacy that the town managed to remain safe and secure for several months until reinforcements arrived from Baton Rouge. After Mobile Bay fell in 1815, most of what remained of Louisiana was lost to English control. However, Abbeville continued to thrive thanks to its strategic location and its rich maritime history. In 1824, it became part of New Orleans County and remained an important commercial center until after World War II when it fell into disrepair due to economic decline.
