From its early days as a small, frontier town in the Louisiana Purchase, Abbeville has been an important center for ammunition production. In 1812, Colonel John Pope established a small arms factory in downtown Abbeville which soon became world-renowned for its quality products.Pope's company manufactured rifles, pistols and shotguns under various brand names including Colt’s Manufacturing Company (later Colt Firearms), Winchester Repeating Arms Company (later Winchester Repeating Arms Corporation) and Remington ordnance companies (later Remington Arms). Ammunition production peaked around 1840 when about 60 percent of all guns made in America were made with Shotgun Ammo exclusively!

In 1875, the United States Congress passed the "Abbeville Gun law" which prohibited the importation of any firearms that were not American made. In 1903, an incident occurred when two handguns sold by Johnnie Barnes to Harry Pollard were used in a shooting at the Louisiana State Fairgrounds. The pistolsbaughed by Pollard resulted in $5,000 damages to several businesses in town. The city council passed an ordinance forbidding anyone under 21 years old from owning or carrying any weapons on July 1, 1907. This ordinance remained in effect until 1911 when it was repealed due to growing youth crime rates.

In 1930 it was destroyed by a fire which destroyed most of the mill buildings and extensive plantation holdings within sight of Abbeville's original courthouse square. However, many aspects about life in this tiny community remain unchanged today including traditional African Methodist Episcopal (AME) worship services conducted at local churches throughout wintertime; Generations of residents have taught themselves to speak French and English fluently; A large number of people continue to farm their way into prosperity; And there is still much to see and do in this picturesque little corner of Louisiana!

Abbeville is a small town in the U.S. state of Louisiana, located on I-10 east of Baton Rouge. The population was 1,784 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New Orleans–Metairie–Bogalusa Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town started as a cluster of log homes built by French colonists in 1718 on the banks of the Abbeville River. The first post office was established in 1725 and became known as "New Abbeville". By 1836, when it became an independent city, Abbeville had a population of over 6,000 people and boasted two newspapers and four churches. In 1858, Abraham Lincoln delivered his only public speech from this location before he left for Washington D.C., which is now called Lincoln Park in nearby Jefferson Parish. For many years after that event, Abbeville was considered to be one of the most important stops on Mr Lincoln's route from New Orleans to Washington D.C.. In 1881, when local officials merged with neighboring Metairie to form what is now Monroe County, they decided to rename their new county after General Robert Ewell Jackson (1814-1885). A year later they also named their first mayor Abraham Ladd (1796-1868). In 1889 they elected their first female mayor – Fannie Lou Hamer (died 1931). In 1915 President Woodrow Wilson visited Abbeville while he prepared for his acceptance speech at Tulane University; during his visit the United States Naval Academy students presented him with a model submarine USS Pompano (SS-2171) which had been constructed at navy shipyards in Jacksonville Florida just prior to Wilson's visit!
The town of Abbeville was founded by the French in 1763. The first whiteSETter to come to this area was John McKnight, who arrived in 1801. In 1802, Samuel Jones bought a tract of land here and started a cotton plantation. He named it "Jones' Plantation." In 1830, the town population totaled about 140 people; by 1840, it had grown to over 500 people. It was during the American Civil War that Abbeville became one of the most active Confederate towns. On April 9, 1861, Confederate General Robert E. Lee attacked Union forces at Battle of Fort Sumter in South Carolina; within minutes, Abbeville had joining the Confederacy and began shelling Union positions from its walls. After the war ended on April 11th (the day after Fort Sumter surrendered), many natives decided not to return home because they were afraid that their homes would be burned down if they did so6
