Despite these changesover time; many aspectsofabbevillenationremainedsteadyandunchanginguntilrecentlywhen they were succinctly summarizedbyMayorSimonsduring his final Annual Address: "We're still just like everybody else down here."
The following is a history of Abbeville, Louisiana. In 1806, the town was founded by Pierre Laclède and his brothers-in-law, Jean Baptiste and Antoine Chouteau. The first post office in the town was established on May 10, 1807. In 1814, the town was named for Father Abbe de la Salle. On December 12, 1861, Confederate General Joseph E. Johnston entered Abbeville and began burning homes and businesses. On January 3, 1862, Johnston's forces burned down the Catholic church in the town. In 1865, General Andrew Johnson ordered troops to burn down all remaining Confederate facilities in Louisiana after they won the Battle of New Orleans. The remains of both churches are still standing today within walking distance of each other in downtown Abbeville.
