Winchester, Kentucky is a small town in the Appalachian Mountains of western Kentucky. The population was 3,362 at the 2010 census and it is the county seat of Perry County. Winchester is located on the Ohio River, northeast of Louisville, and east of Lexington. The first Europeans to visit what is now Winchester were French in 1606 when they built Fort Duquesne on the present site of downtown. In 1787, General George Washington visited this area and recommended that Indiana Territory be divided into two parts: one for Kentucky and one for West Virginia. On December 12, 1787, tension between Great Britain and France caused an outbreak of violence near Winchester where British soldiers killed eight Frenchmen. This event became known as the Massacre of Winchester. Winchester was originally founded by John Trimble in 1796 as a trading post on the Ohio River opposite modern day Louisville. The name change to Winchester because there was then no market for goods produced in Appalachia other than those found near Pittsburgh or Philadelphia. The first settlers arrived during what is called "the hard times" because farmers could not afford to buy land or build roads so they had to sharecropped their crops with local Native Americans who also shared hunting and fishing rights with them. By 1827 most of central Kentucky had been developed with soapstone quarries beginning operation in 1819 which made Winchester one of America's leading soapstone manufacturers until quartz mining replaced it around 1910-1920 removing much competition from Winchester's traditional industries including shipbuilding (Navy Yard) and clockmaking (Trimble). In 1870s Captain John Sappington established a flour mill atpresent day Georgetown which soon became notable for its quality flour products exported all over Europe. After World War II many factories closed but reopened under new management such as Alcoa Aluminum Company (now American Aluminium Company), Monsanto Chemical Corporation, US Steel Corporation (later ArcelorMittal) which built a plant adjacent to Georgetown Flour Mill now part of JDS Uniphase plc., Phillips Petroleum Company Incorporated which operated an oil refinery adjacent to Georgetown Plant before closing down due to environmental problems; Peabody Coal & Coke Company; Union Carbide Co.; Allis-Chalmers Manufacturing Company; Dean Foods Incorporated; Belknap Electric Cooperative; First Energy Regulatory Commission LLC.; Citizens Gas Light company All these organizations are still active today but have different names reflecting their current roles: ChevronTexaco USA Inc., BP Exploration & Production Limited Partnership Wyoming Pipeline Partners LP., United States Steel Corporation (formerly ArcelorMittal), Honeywell International Incorporated.--just a few examples
