Winchester, Kentucky is a city in and the county seat of Logan County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 10,815 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous city in Logan County and one of the most populous cities in Kentucky. Winchester has been home to a large number of people throughout its history, including some of America's earliest settlers. In 1792, John Lennon from Liverpool, England moved to Winchester with his family to escape religious persecution in England. He played saxophone for a local band before returning to Liverpool two years later to start a successful music career. In 1814, Winchester became part of the Virginia Colony and was incorporated as an incorporated town on December 12th, 1814 by General James Wilkinson. The population grew rapidly due to new development and trade within the colony which led to increased wealth for residents. On January 1st 1825 Winchester became an independent city under the name of "Winchester", following ratification by the Virginia General Assembly on February 3rd that year. In 1865-1866 Andrew Johnson (Ulysses S Grant's Vice President) served as Mayor of Winchester after winning election as an Independent candidate against all odds against incumbent Democrat James Buchanan over Reconstructionist policies championed by Johnson himself which had been implemented through Governor Edwin Stanton of New York City instead of via state government After Johnson's inauguration as President he continued this policy while officeholding until March 4th 1865 when he resigned due to ill health On October 20th 1865 Union forces attacked Confederate positions around Petersburg resulting in significant casualties with many women and children being killed or captured On November 11th 1865 Lincoln delivered his Emancipation Proclamation freeing all slaves within nine months following his inauguration This event marks one pivotal point during American history where black Americans were finally given their freedom
