Winchester, Kentucky is a small town located in the Commonwealth of Kentucky. The population was 5,621 at the 2000 census. Winchester is the county seat for Fayette County. It is part of the Louisville metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Winchester were French explorers and traders who passed through in 1608 on their way to find new lands in present-day Indiana. In 1778, British General James Wilkinson’s forces burned down the courthouse and jail in what is today known as Wilkinson Place after they captured and destroyed much of the town during an attack by American forces under Colonel John Patton. Winchester was originally called Greenville because it grew up around a grove of trees that supplied lumber for buildings in Greenville Township. When Lisbon, Kentucky, became its own town in 1802, Greenville ceased to exist as an official name and was changed to Winchester because that’s where most of its residents lived at that time. The name stuck until 1881 when Fayette County was formed and then again from 1890-1912 when it absorbed portions of seven other counties including westernmost Butler County which included Lexington (then known as Whatcom). A post office called Winchester had been established in 1779 but served only parts of Fayette County until 1800; it moved to Louisville before that date. On December 12, 1800, President John Adams signed a bill naming Winchester “the Great City of Christendom” – also becoming one of America’s original three capital cities (the others being Philadelphia and New York). In 1811 Congress authorized growth within limits set forth by William Henry Harrison who had become president two years earlier: “It shall be lawful for those persons or classes outgrowing feeble or unproductive territory…to purchase land within this commonwealth [Fayette] containing 640 acres or more…and thereon erected a house or houses so built as to form an agricultural village with all necessary appurtenances; Provided always That no such building shall exceed twenty feet wide x thirty feet long x twelve feet high….And all future villages said to contain more than forty acres must be erected outside the limits aforesaid….The inhabitants thereof may vote on all questions which concern them together with members chosen by them from among themselves subject like unto their equals male citizens created freeholders throughout this commonwealth; And no property belonging either directly or indirectly to any inhabitant thereof shall be taken into account therein upon his election thereto.'" The ordinance establishing Fayette County went into effect on November 1st 1801 following ratification by state legislatures over objections from several large communities west of Cincinnati who claimed they would gain too much power if given control over their own affairs within Covington Parish - including Lexington - instead ofwithin Fayette COUNTY itself! In 1850 Winchester became only the second US township larger than one square mile when it split off from Greenville Township forming its own independent government which lasted until 1907 when both townships were combined back into Greenville Township again due largely to pressure from developers looking for cheap land close enough to major city amenities! Although some vestiges still remain today including a large shopping center & highway interchange just outside town proper – my favorite spot for lunch – most businesses have closed up shop since 2000 according older residents started exodusging towards bigger & better paying jobs closer inside town – although I do hear whispers about starting up small businesses once again once market conditions improve! Today's Winchesters are descendants of early settlers brought over by families fleeing revolutionary war America while others followed Civil War veterans home after Reconstruction ended. A primary industry has been agriculture butchery services remain important especially around Greensboro Street near Main Street where farmers sell their animals fresh off the farm each day—a tradition dating back centuries!

Winchester was founded in 1792 by James Winchester and his brother-in-law, Noah Webster. At first, the town was located on a small sandbank at the mouth of the river Severn. In 1801, Winchester became one of the member towns of what would become The Ohio River Compact. In 1827, Winchester became an incorporated town under Kentucky law. On December 12, 1861, during The American Civil War, Winchester was occupied by Confederate forces and burned down. From its establishment until 1862, Winchester was part of Virginia. In that year, Union General Robert E. Lee besieged and captured Richmond while trying to move north to take Vicksburg with his army; as a result of this siege and battle Winchester became the most heavily damaged city in Virginia after Petersburg had been destroyed by Confederate forces two years earlier. On January 6 1863, General Ulysses S. Grant arrived at Winchester with an army seeking reinforcement for Operation Overland; instead he found only smoke rising from the burning town as Union troops retreated back towards Richmond following their victory over Confederate General Jubal Early on February 9th. In 1865, when Reconstructionab commenced in America following The Civil War – which saw African Americans granted civil rights within newly created states such as Kentucky – Winchester reverted back to its antebellum white population under new leadership including Mayor John Mapes who served until 1868 when he resigned due to ill health shortly after taking office amidst accusations of bribery from businessmen interests seeking state patronage through Mapes’ wife Alice Wirtz (the daughter of a wealthy Cincinnati lawyer). Following her husband’s death in 1870 she served as City Clerk from 1871 until her election as mayor in 1888 when she also became acting city manager but relinquished that post upon her inauguration because she did not want any political power brokerages within her municipality which might conflict with those serving on the board of trustees for The University Of Kentucky Lexington which included members herself including some sons or daughters of mayors/city clerks/etc.). In 1895 she married Judge John Cavanaugh (1865-1946) who had clerked for Justice Clarence Thomas before becoming mayoralty candidate against incumbent Andrew Johnson Jr., but lost handily despite receiving more votes than Johnson among active citizens--a unique event at that time given lacklustre turnout rates for local elections throughout much of America due largely to vaunted “militancy” brought about largely by Republicans via organizations such as Ku Klux Klan chapters eager to intimidate black voters during Reconstruction Era voting processes.) She died suddenly at home on November 16th 1946 surrounded by family and friends who paid final respects before interment inside Holy Cross Cemetery next door where Judge Cavanaugh rests today beside his wife Alice Acheson Kavanaugh (1889-1963), sister Margaret Burchill Kavanaugh (1915-2006), niece Denise Lunsford Kavanaugh (born 1951) and nephew Mark Jaffe Kavanaugh (born 1970).
