The Conte hammer had two key features: it could be used with either one or two hands, and it could be turned left or right to driven nails into hardwood floors or posts. The first guns that were made in Winchester were muzzleloaders. As these firearms became more popular, they began to require heavier hammers to pounding nails into wood. By 1892, there were over 100 gun hammers available on the market! Today, many people continue to use gun hammers for various tasks including driving nails into wood; however, only a few are still manufactured specifically for this purpose.

The first gun hammer was created in 1596 by Nicholas-Jacques Conte. It had a single nail that was inserted into a hole in the handle, then it was turned so that it hit the back of the locked door. In 1795, an improved gun hammer design was created by Nicholas-Jacques Conte which featured two nails with different heads on each side of the Hammer head. This allowed for more consistent striking power when hitting locks or other objects with the Hammer. In 1823, an even more advanced design called a "pistol type" hammer was invented by Danish inventor Peter Henrik Jorgensen which featured a firing pin that could be pulled out and replaced with any other kind of striker available at that time. This made it possible for anyone to create their own gun hammers using various parts from different firearms. Gun hammers continue to be used today both for traditional purposes such as opening locks and fireplace Doors, as well as modern applications such as defensive self-defense tools such as pepper spray guns or stun grenades.

WNIC ( Public Broadcasting Service) began transmission from studios located within downtown on Main Street on October 1st 1951 In 1967 WNUV ( University of Louisville Television) began broadcasting from studios located just east of downtown which continues to be used today by both stations In 1971 WLWT ( CBS affiliate) moved from their original transmitter location across town north of Fort Knox to their current location on Third Street just south of downtown which has allowed them to maintain an affiliation with CBS until they switched affiliations with ABC effective January 15th 2011
