The drive resulted in much local economic growth and helped make Winchester one of America's leading cattle towns during this period. Winchester also played a significant role during World War II as a manufacturing center for munitions production. During this time, Winchester became home to some of America's most famous wartime allies such as General Dwight D Eisenhower and Admiral Chester Nimitz. In 1945, Congress passed the Atomic Energy Act which led to nuclear weapons production at nearby plutonium-processing plants near Glasgow and Sellersburg Heights. In recent years, Winchester has seen increased development around its core business districts such as downtown and Old Town Squareoffering unique shopping opportunities and nightlife options unavailable anywhere else within miles radius
