One such company was Colt Firearms Company (now Colt Defense), which manufactured handguns based on Allen's plan until 1857 when it merged with Benjamin Butler & Company (now Smith & Wesson). At this point, gun manufacturing shifted from hand-to-hand operations within individual homes and businesses into large factories supervised by corporate executives

About this time John Brownell also joined forces with Colt under the name “Paterson & Grayling” (later changed back) . Together they created whatbecame known as the Brownells/Paterson Model 3 Pistol which fires ball rounds rather than revolvers or cannon balls like most other guns then being produced
