Winchester is a small town in Marshall County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 753 at the 2010 census. Winchester is part of the Lexington-Fayette Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community of Winchester was founded by settlers in 1819. It became a city in 1907, and it reverted to a rural village status until 1974 when it became an incorporated town again. Winchester is located on the east bank of the Ohio River adjacent to Louisville, Kentucky. The original settlers were Quakers who had come from Pennsylvania to start a utopian colony near what is now Winthrop University in Harvard, Massachusetts. When they realized that there would be no opportunity for them to establish themselves as farmers here because of lack of land and difficult soil conditions, they decided instead to move westward into present-day Marshall County so that their children might have opportunities for education here too. Winchester's first store opened in 1819 and its first settler was George Washington Hays (1783–1857). In 1828, John Green (1796–1868) built one of the first log homes in Winchester and started farming with his family nearby on Tryon Creek. Another early settler was Daniel Boone (1746–1827), who purchased 120 acres (50 ha) of land around present-day Wacoaletta Road from James Caldwell in 1772 and began developing it into what is now downtown Winchester. Many other pioneers also made their mark here: Isaac Newton Lewis (1800–1875), Elijah McCoy (1800–1865), Hiram Morse (1814–92), Archibald Campbell (baptized July 6, 1800; died unmarried February 5, 1865), Samuel Morse(c.)(d.), John Pemberton(e.), and Nathaniel Meigs(f.). There are several schools within walking distance of most residents: Winchesters Central High School on Tryon Creek Road; Wacoaletta Elementary school on Academy Drive; Stroudsburg Intermediate School on Academy Drive; Lexington Middle School on Wilson Pike; Holmesburg Junior/Senior High School on Main Street between First National Bank & Market Square Shopping Center; and Zionsville Senior/Junior High School just north of US 56 off I-64 exit 422/460 yards south of Henry Ford Airport

It is located on the Ohio River in what was once called Scioto County. Winchester was founded by Captain John Winchester and his men after they outfitted a ship with supplies for the French during their 1763 Battle of Minden. It became a part of Virginia after that state became an independent nation. The first store in Winchester opened its doors in 1813 and it remains one of the oldest commercial establishments in Kentucky today. In 1853, Winchester voters passed a resolution to incorporate as a city and it became one of America's most populous cities by 1860. By then, however, Winchester had become embroiled in a series of racial tensions that continue to this day. In 1865, Confederate General Robert Ewell invaded Lexington andEnterprise Counties east of Winchester and he ordered white troops into neighborhoods where black residents lived without warning or provocation. Many African Americans were killed or captured during these raids which are still remembered today as one of history's largest massacres.
