Winchester, Kentucky is a small town in the U.S. state of Kentucky, located on the Ohio River. The population was 921 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lexington-Fayette, KY Metropolitan Statistical Area and is the seat of Harrison County. Winchester is known as "The Glocktown" because of its many firearms factories and dealerships, including Glock Inc., Colt Firearms Corporation, Smith & Wesson USA, Ruger Arms Manufacturing Company, SIG Sauer AG and Sig Sauer & Co., Incorporated. Winchester also produces shotguns and rifles under license from other companies such as FN Herstal GmbH & Co., LTD., Remington Arms Company LLC, Savage Arms Corporation and Sturm Ruger Company LLC.

In the early 1800s, Europeans began to explore and trade in Asia for goods such as guns and ammunition. In 1847, Congress passed the first Gun Control Act which regulated the manufacture, possession, and carrying of firearms. The act also established a national firearms registry. In 1934, the National Firearms Act was amended to create the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS). NICS is a nationwide system that allows gun buyers and sellers to check whether an individual has criminal records that could disqualify them from owning a gun.
Winchester is the largest city in Kentucky and one of the oldest cities in the United States. Winchester was founded by three Welshmen on December 12, 1768, as a trading post on the lower Ohio River. The town grew quickly and became an important center for trade with Native American tribes and Europe. In 1814, Winchester was chartered as a city by the United States Congress. The growth of Winchester led to its annexation by Louisville in 1870. By 1920, Winchester had reached its current size with a population of over 100,000 people. The history of Winchester began withvikings who were seeking new land to settle. By 1768, Welsh settlers had arrived in what is now Kentucky and started trading with native groups near the confluence of the Ohio and Monongahela rivers. On December 12th,1768, three Welshmen named John Sevier*, James Craven*, William Davenport* set out from Wales for what is now Winchester on horseback carrying only their crops and tools. Within weeks they had erected a small frame cabin called Fort Sevier on present-day Poplar Street in downtown Winchester. Over time this small outpost grew into a thriving Trading Post which served both local Native American tribes as well as traders from across North America including British merchants.* In 1814, when Kentucky became part of the United States of America following its admission into Confederation (the first state to do so), Winchester became an important crossroads between Utopia Valley west of Lexington (then part of Virginia) and eastern Kyvee County extending along river valleys eastward to Cumberland Gap where Pennsylvania met Maryland.* At that time there were no roads or railroads connecting these regions so goods moved either by water or land route*. From here travelers could purchase goods at various stores located along Main Street which ran northeast from downtown until it crossed Indian Creek just south of present day University Avenue.* This artery served as a main commercial thoroughfare for much of southeastern Kentucky during this early period*. In addition to providing access to markets upriver* numerous homes were built along Main Street providing dwellings for merchants*, farmers*, mechanics** & other professionals*. It was here that butter was manufactured from raw animal products such as cows intestine* & offal* while lace made from wool yarn came downriver from Philadelphia& was finished at nearby looms before being exported back upriver† From Fort Sevier traders also collected saltpeter (an essential ingredient used in making gunpowder)**** As trade increased within Kyvee County *and beyond* some residents decided to establish closeruts located on high ground overlooking downtown *. These are today known collectively simply as “The Heights” **** One such development occurred around 1820 when General James Hance laid out two square miles containing modern day Decatur Mall (#4), Belknap Hills Golf Course (#5) & First National Bank Building (#6) all currently within limits Of Lexington City Limits***** This area would come to be known formally as “Winchester Township” As commerce flourished within central KYvee County *and beyond*) more families began moving away from protective rural lifestyles towards larger urban settings**** With increasing transportation options including steamboats which traveled down river then wagons ferried overland† wagon traffic declined until approximately 1840 when improvements in roadways routed traffic directly past downtown **** Wilsonians gradually transitioned into country living styles beginning around 1830*** When traveling outside town one encountered tracts graded ¾ acre each land grants dwarfing even today’s ½ acre parcels vernacular architecture continued unabated throughout entire nation throughout frontier period*** Today many fine examples can still be found scattered throughout rural areas adjacent To major metropolitan areas
