St. Matthews, Kentucky is a small town in the eastern part of the United States. It is located on the Eastern Shore of Kentucky, about 25 miles east of Louisville, and about 30 miles north of Lexington. According to the 2010 census, the population was 1,641. The name "Matthews" comes from Matthew Paris which was also known as Saint Matthews because he died there in 1009 AD. The parish church built in 1876 is one of America's earliest Gothic Revival churches and features a high spire with an orange belltower. The St. Matthews community was founded by Irish Catholics who had fled to Kentucky in the mid-19th century following religious persecution in their native Ireland. They erected a log cabin called "Fairytale" on what is now Druid Hill Road in 1834 and began trading goods they produced along the Eastern Shore for goods brought by traders from other parts of America. The first school opened in 1837 and within two years it had become a functioning day & night school that served as a model for similar schools established throughout Kentucky and neighboring states. By 1840, many Catholic families had left for good due to economic hardship caused by anti-Catholic sentiment across much of central Appalachia during this period (see Partitioning of America). In 1845, Father John McMahon started our present day seminary at Our Lady Of Mount Carmel Church (now Xavier University) where education was given primarily through correspondence courses offered online through Asia/Pacific educational companies operating out of Hong Kong or Singapore rather than traditional brick & mortar classrooms teaching students face to face like their ancestors had done before them ( see virtual learning ). As more Catholics arrived to St Matthews over time, some found themselves without homes or businesses where they could offer services such as lawn care or window cleaning so they set up shop selling baked goods door-to-door until eventually opening their own businesses inside or outside the parish hall which came to be known as "the market." However, although Dayton is now a major metropolitan area in Ohio with over 150 million residents (and has been called "the breadbasket of Ohio"), St. Matthews remains an important cultural center located within its boundaries that is still frequented by people from all over central Kentucky
In 1785, a group of Kentucky Baptists founded the town of St. Matthews on the banks of the river Donelson. The town grew quickly and in 1811, it was moved to its current location on the banks of the River Donelson. In 1827, St. Matthews became part of Louisville and in 1937, it merged with Fayetteville to form Louisville/Fayetteville.
