In 1812, a group of Methodists from the town of Matthews, Kentucky founded the first Methodist church in this region. The first service was held on July 16th and the congregation grew quickly. In 1816, they organized their own parish and named it St. Matthews after their pastor, Rev. James Meeks. By 1830, there were over 200 members in attendance at services at the old chapel located on what is now Main Street in Matthews. The churchyard contains four graves that date back to 1824: those of Reverend John Henson (1809-1875), Reverend James Meeks (1798-1868), Mrs. Elizabeth Cranch (1799-1864) and Mr. John Purdy (1800-1876). The only other grave is that of Mr. Jno Aiken who died in 1865 aged 78 years old. A plaque erected by the Louisville chapter of the United Daughters of THE American Revolution honoring St Matthews Church's role as a center for evangelical Christianity during the antebellum period reads "This church was built by Methodists in 1812 as an outpost on this Side of Lexington; It received its present name from Rev James Meek who presides here today."
