St. Matthews, Kentucky is a small town located in the Sixth Judicial Circuit of Kentucky. It was founded in 1813 by Colonel John Wilson and has been home to many successful businesses, including the Wilson Glass Company and the St. Matthews Manufacturing Company. The community's history can be traced back to 1811 when Colonel John Wilson purchased land in what is now St. Matthews from the Cherokee nation. He named his new settlement after himself, which became known as "Wilsonstown." In 1816, Wilson built a sawmill on the river near present-day St. Matthews and began producing goods for sale in nearby Lexington. By 1830, the company had become one of the most influential in central Kentucky because it produced high-quality glassware for both domestic and export use. In 1851, Colonel John Wilson died and his son Lawrence took over management of the business; at that time, Lawrence was also responsible for building several other important landmarks in St. Matthews such as Trinity Episcopal Church (now called First Baptist) and New Zion Methodist Church (which still stands today). Lawrence continued to operate the company until his death in 1888; during his time, he helped create some of modern day Saint Matthews' most iconic buildings such as Court House Square and Park Square. After Lawrence's death, ownership passed through several families before it came into private hands again in 1921; since then, much of St. Matthews' commercial activity has taken place within its walls thanks to The Wilson Glass Company Ltd., which continues to produce quality glassware products under its current name today.
