St. Matthews, Kentucky is a small town in the southwestern corner of Kentucky. The population was 2,914 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Louisville metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1792 by Reverend James Meeks and his family as a log cabin colony on the banks of the Ohio River. Meeks named the settlement after himself, Saint Matthews, leader of an evangelical group that had come to America from Great Britain in 1776. The name stuck and St. Matthews became one of Kentucky's first towns. In 1811, General Andrew Jackson hailed from this area and granted land to Rev. John Fenton for a church and school here (Fenton also donated land for baseball fields). In 1830, St. Matthews became an incorporated village with voting rights under state law; it remains so today despite being located within Johnson County since 1836 when it was split off from Henderson County (which included present-day Louisville). The town of St. Matthews, Kentucky is the namesake for one of the most important events in its history- the founding of the Roman Catholic Church in 1853. The parish was founded by Father Jameson and Sister Maria Costantini who were born in nearby Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The first bishop of Louisville was named John Madden, but he died before he could consecrate a church there. So Reverend Nicholas Casey took on this responsibility and built what would become known as Saint Matthews Parish House on Fourth Street in 1854. In 1886, when Louisville became a city, St. Matthews became part of that city's new Municipal District which included much of central Kentucky including downtown and much of the rural areas around it. In 1920, when St. Matthews lost its incorporation into Louisville, it reverted to Parish status within Municipal District 2 and remains an independent parish today with its own pastor and governing body to date (the current Bishop is Monsignor Michael McHale). St. Matthews has been home to many famous people including Confederate General Robert Ewell who managed to remain free during the American Civil War while living here for four years; author William Golding who wrote his seminal novel about life inaintened bullion miners called "The Grapes Of Wrath"; Senator Sam Rayburn who represented North Carolina during the Sixty-Third Congress; and businessman Don Rossiter who played a significant role in developing both Interstate 255 and Interstate 40 through this same area. Today, many residents are still descendants of those early settlers such asFather Jameson himself or their children or grandchildren still residing hereabouts doing business either as farmers or entrepreneurs within locales from whence they came like grain elevator operator Tom Hanks or truck driver Ricky Dobbs (father of actor Neil Dobbs).
The first European to set foot on the area now known as Kentucky was a French trader, Pierre de Laclède, in 1692. In 1765, General James Wilkinson Purchase of Virginia landed at Paducah on the Cumberland River and claimed the land for America. AOVERLAND (1785-1800) The Overland Stage Company ran between settlements in present day Kentucky and Missouri. In 1800, overland mail route from St. Louis to Louisville was established using wagons pulled by horses. In 1821, President James K. Polk built Fort Donelson in what is now Nashville to protect American traders traveling through Mexico during the Mexican-American War. In 1825, John Crain helped lay out the town of Lexington on the Kentucky River near today's downtown Knoxville when he purchased land from group of Scotsmen who had settled thereabouts in 1785.
