St. Matthews, Kentucky is a small town in Hardin County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,534 at the 2010 census. It is named for Saint Matthews of Damascus who preached in the area during the 18th century. The first settlement in what is now St. Matthews was founded by Quakers in 1798. The first post office at St. Matthews was established in 1814 and the first store was built in 1837. In 1870, an Episcopal church was built and the community became known as "The Metropolis of Hardin County." In 1907, a schoolhouse and Methodist chapel were built on Main Street near the present day courthouse building. A Baptist church followed suit in 1912 and a Catholic church also served St. Matthews until it burned down in 1949. In 1957, a new high school was built on Main Street and named after John Fenton Webb High School which had been closed by that time due to lack of students or money to rebuild following World War II (Stations-Jones). In 1985, another high school opened on Park Avenue south of town with its own football stadium which has since been used for various events including homecoming games and other sporting events such as concerts/festivals etc., making it one of the most popular high schools around hereabouts; currently it serves as East Central Community College's main campus with satellite campuses throughout Hardin County.. Today much of what once made up village life has disappeared behind dense cedar forests that have grown there over time numerous times so dense that you can't see your hand from your stomach - except when you take off your gloves to do some gardening! And if you happen to be out walking through those woods today (or tomorrow), don’t forget about taking off your shoes too because not only will you be walking barefoot but also trust me when I say that there are places where even just barefooting will get you quite an idea about how dirty these woods really are! Anyway back to our story... back when people lived here they farmed (and still farm) their food using whatever they could find growing nearby either corn or beans or wheat or potatoes or tobacco... pretty much anything they could get their hands on! They would sow their crops early morning before sunrise so that they’d have them ready for harvest by noon… then we had lunch right before going into work all day long! That’s probably why we call these days “the working week” because all those fellows used to work from Monday until Friday instead of taking any kinda vacation days lol! One interesting fact about this little corner of Kentucky is that although birthrates declined beginning around 1940 due mostly to rural flight away from multiple wars being fought over there (!), nonetheless recent research indicates that somewhat surprisingly family units remain relatively stable within populated areas overall despite changes wrought by economic globalization etc.; something researchers speculate may be attributable largely to more traditional social norms regarding childcare provision availability/quality among families living closeby Regardless, one must think about all those kids growing up without ever having seen daylight outside THEIR window(es)!

The first settlement in what is now St. Matthews, Kentucky was made by a group of French traders in the early 17th century. The area that is now St. Matthews was then part of the Shawnee Nation and at one time it was home to over 100 tribes of Native Americans. The first European to come to what is now St. Matthews was Captain Samuel de Champlain in 1692. He built a trading post near present-day Saint Matthews and named it after his hometown of Québec, Canada. In 1812, General Andrew Jackson's army invaded Kentucky and destroyed most of the Native American settlements in the area including Saint Matthews. In 1814, when France ceded Louisiana to America, Louisiana Territorial Governor James Kenedy offered land east of Louisville for a community called Saint Matthews which would include 500 settlers from Alabama, Georgia, Missouri, and other states who had emigrated to Kentucky during the Mexican-American War (1846-48). The site chosen for Saint Matthews was on an bluff overlooking the Ohio River at what is now downtown Saint Matthews. On April 15, 1814, 400 people arrived at the bluff and began construction of their log cabin homes with help from local families who donated materials such as logs and stones. They named their new town "SaintMatthews" in honor of John Baptist Parish in Louisiana which they hoped would become their new home after America acquired Texas from Mexico. The first school in St. Matthews was founded by Revd Drayson McNaught on November 9th 1830 using students from nearby Santiam School which had been established two years earlier as a girls' school located between Lexington and Jeffersonville under the direction of Mrs Jane Chesnutt (later Mrs John Lennon). When Mr McNaught died suddenly three months later without children to continue teaching at the school he bequeathed his estate including 150 acres (60 ha) along with $500 per year for maintenance or education funds directed toward building a brick schoolhouse on this property which became known as McNaught Hall today www . saint matthews historical society
