It is part of the Louisville–Jefferson metropolitan area. The tradition of Protestant Christianity in St. Matthews began in 1825 with the arrival of Rev. Drury Bickerton from Connecticut as pastor of an early Methodist church. In 1925, St. Matthews became home to what is now known as "The University ofKentucky" which began offering degrees in 1930 and has since grown into one of the largest universities in America with campuses located throughout Kentucky and Tennessee.[2] St. Matthews also hosted The Game Show on KYW-TV for many years until it moved to Louisville in 2006;[3][4] currently it airs on WLKY-TV (NBC) under new call letters WWLP.[5]

In 1801, a group of Methodist ministers led by Reverend James C. Morrill founded the town of St. Matthews in present-day Kentucky. The first church in St. Matthews was built on the site of present-day downtown in 1802 and it is still used today as the town’s main church. The first school in St. Matthews was also built there and it is still used today as the town’s primary educational institution. In 1806, Reverend John Rankin served as the first bishop of what is now Louisville, Kentucky and he helped establish the Catholic Church in St. Matthews as well. Bishop Rankin also helped found other churches throughout Kentucky and across America such as those in Nashville, Tennessee (1811), Cincinnati, Ohio (1815), and Boston, Massachusetts (1817). By 1830, over 1,500 people lived in St. Matthews with its own newspaper and two schools which were among the most successful in their respective regions. In 1835, when Samuel Morse established West Point College near Philadelphia to commemorate American inventor George Washington’s birthday, Rev. Morrill donated land to build a college within walking distance of St. Matthews “as a token that our city would never be without religious education for young men or women who might yet aspire to eminence among us Americans” (Fowler 2). Over time however West Point College relocated several times until it finally moved to its current location on Market Street near Eastern Market in 1923; making St. Matthews one of only six U S colleges located within walking distance of an urban population center2! Over time too other important institutions have been founded withinSt Matthews including Baptist Theological Seminary (1936), First Presbyterian Church (1948), Southern Christian Leadership Institute (1965) – all leading up to today’s flourishing Saint Matthews community where religious instruction is especially essential for generations OF young adults WANTING TO LEARN ABOUT GOD AND HIS PLAN FOR THE WORLD!3
In 1792, Kentucky was admitted to the United States as a state. The first Baptist church in Kentucky was founded in that year by Rev. David Calderwood. In 1802, a Methodist church was also established in Kentucky.
