St. Matthews, Kentucky is a small town in the U.S. state of Kentucky, located about 33 miles southeast of Lexington and 21 miles east of Louisville. The population was 6,812 at the 2010 census. The first white person to live in what is now St. Matthews was Johannes Gutenberg, who worked on a printing press in nearby Newark in 1453-54. In 1792 David Whitaker founded Whitaker & Co., an early cotton mill that became one of America's leading textile companies. The town name comes from Saint Matthews Parish Church which was built on the site of a large Indian mound near present day Old Hickory Hill Road and Broadway Avenue in 1825-27 by Reverend John Whiteaker and his family for settlers who had fled persecution on the frontier during the American Revolution. The post office at St Matthews was established on December 12, 1816, by Samuel Pemberton with James Denny as his deputy; it continued until it was discontinued on July 15, 1862 due to Union military occupation during the American Civil War (the post office reopened at Lebanon after Confederate forces burned that village). This will include more than 30 stores including Searsucker Toys Outlet Store as well as Bed Bath & Beyond

The town of St. Matthews, Kentucky, was founded in 1827 by James A. Beard and his wife, Martha Giles Beard. The Beards were the first to settle in this area and they built a log cabin on the current site of the town. In 1829, they had a daughter, Catharine Beard, who married John Witherspoon. The Witherspoons ran a farm in the village until their death in 1881. Catharine Beard then took over the farm and continued to run it until her death in 1944. The town of St. Matthews was named for Saint Matthews (died c. 54 AD), an early Christian missionary on British India's subcontinent who performed many miracles during his stay there. In 1872, Bishop George Hill erected a Protestant church at the corner of High and Elm streets in honor of Saint Matthews and his wife Patricia Doyle Hill . The first services were held on October 12th that year. Reverend J C Gilmore officiated at that service as organist/pianist for that year only; he would also serve as pastor from 1873-1875 when Rev E F Curry came to take over that function from him at the request of Bishop Hill himself In 1907, part of what is now downtown St. Matthews was destroyed by a fire caused by lightning while being lit up for display at an exposition sponsored by Louisville Slugger Baseball Company . That same year saw construction begin on what is now Manchester Place which served as both the original Main Street entrance into downtown St. Matthews as well as one of its two stores which stood there until 1978 when it burned down together with most of downtown Sts main street What are today known as several original buildings within Downtown were once homes including Mrs R H Maynard’s Mansion (now known as “The Mansion”), Mrs S B Yeates House (now known as “Yeates House”) and Dr J A Ladd’s house which still stands today across from Mr K G Freeman’s auto dealership on East Market Street The building currently housing Holy Family Catholic Church was originally built next door to Dr J A Ladd’s house back when it housed Dr J G Bowman School before moving next door to Holy Family Catholic Church around 1957
The town of St. Matthews was founded in 1786 by the Reverend John James Smith. The first church was built in 1814 and the first school was organized in 1829. In 1848, the town became a U.S. town when it was annexed by Kentucky.
