In 1865, Saint Matthews was renamed Louisville after General Ulysses S. Grant became president of the United States. Many people in Stankerville decided they would like to have their own name too so they began to change their names to coincide with General Grant's hometowns - Louisville (Jefferson County), Nashville (Davidson County), Chattanooga (Chattanooga County), Springfield (Stephens County), etcetera. Eventually all but one city in Kentucky changed its name to Louisville - Saint Matthews had long since become just another local community among many others across the state
